Day 21: now I’m back on track 😊 here’s the 2nd film I’m currently watching for my #365classicmoviechallenge it’s the 1936 screwball comedy “My Man Godfrey” starring William Powell, Carole Lombard, Gail Patrick & Alice Brady 😊 William Powell and Carole Lombard used to be married and was divorced 3 years before the film was made but it was Powell who suggested his ex-wife to play the role of Irene because of the similarities of their characters in real life and she got the part and agreed to do it 😊 other actresses considered included Marion Davies, Constance Bennett & Miriam Hopkins 😊. At one point on set Powell and director Gregory La Cava had a disagreement over how Godfrey should be portrayed and they ended up settling it over a bottle of scotch and the next morning La Cava came back to the set with a headache and Powell stayed home and sent a telegram saying “We May have found Godfrey last night but we lost Powell. See you tomorrow” 😂😂 Carole Lombard was known for swearing and adding the swear words in her dialogue while shooting and while it was amusing for the cast it did made shooting difficult requiring multiple retakes and there’s actually blooper reels of her swearing on camera 😂😂. In 1937 the Oscars introduced the supporting actor & actress categories as awards and the film was one of the first to be nominated in those categories for the first time for Mischa Auer in the actor category and Alice Brady in the actress category. In total the film was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best director for La Cava, Best Actress for Lombard, Best Actor for Powell and best screenplay although it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture it’s the first film to be nominated in all 4 categories & the only film to be nominated in all 4 categories and not be nominated for Best Picture. #williampowell #carolelombard #gailpatrick #alicebrady #mymangodfrey #screwballcomedy #classicmovienight #backontrack #classicmovies #classichollywood #oldhollywood
