1940's MY FAVORITE WIFE was so beautiful and such fun to see with an audience. Laughed all the way through. Also loved cinematography of #Rudolphmaté and of course the #costumedesign of #HowardGreer. The wardrobes for both #IreneDunne and #GailPatrick are extraordinary. Intro by @macantone and Jennifer Grant. #TCMFF (at Egyptian Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwLrAoNA-0E/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ncwn4d4ccrtp
Day 21: now I’m back on track 😊 here’s the 2nd film I’m currently watching for my #365classicmoviechallenge it’s the 1936 screwball comedy “My Man Godfrey” starring William Powell, Carole Lombard, Gail Patrick & Alice Brady 😊 William Powell and Carole Lombard used to be married and was divorced 3 years before the film was made but it was Powell who suggested his ex-wife to play the role of Irene because of the similarities of their characters in real life and she got the part and agreed to do it 😊 other actresses considered included Marion Davies, Constance Bennett & Miriam Hopkins 😊. At one point on set Powell and director Gregory La Cava had a disagreement over how Godfrey should be portrayed and they ended up settling it over a bottle of scotch and the next morning La Cava came back to the set with a headache and Powell stayed home and sent a telegram saying “We May have found Godfrey last night but we lost Powell. See you tomorrow” 😂😂 Carole Lombard was known for swearing and adding the swear words in her dialogue while shooting and while it was amusing for the cast it did made shooting difficult requiring multiple retakes and there’s actually blooper reels of her swearing on camera 😂😂. In 1937 the Oscars introduced the supporting actor & actress categories as awards and the film was one of the first to be nominated in those categories for the first time for Mischa Auer in the actor category and Alice Brady in the actress category. In total the film was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best director for La Cava, Best Actress for Lombard, Best Actor for Powell and best screenplay although it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture it’s the first film to be nominated in all 4 categories & the only film to be nominated in all 4 categories and not be nominated for Best Picture. #williampowell #carolelombard #gailpatrick #alicebrady #mymangodfrey #screwballcomedy #classicmovienight #backontrack #classicmovies #classichollywood #oldhollywood
Watching the underrated 1941 Shirley Temple classic (and one of my favorite movies 😊) “Kathleen” tonight co-starring Herbert Marshall, Gail Patrick & Laraine Day 😊😊 This was considered to be her big comeback to the screen after leaving 20th Century Fox the year before in 1940 because of her movies waning in popularity at the time due to the fact that she was growing up. Before that she was one of the biggest stars of the 1930s among other stars at the time like Clark Gable, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford and she was the biggest (& probably the only successful) child star during that decade becoming the no.1 box office star 4 straight years in a row from 1935-1938 with successful movies like “The Little Colonel”, “Bright Eyes”, “Curly Top” & “The Little Princess” She moved to MGM the following year in 1941 while focusing on school although “Kathleen” was her only movie with the studio because they didn’t really know what to do with her (one of their plans was to try and team her up with Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney in “Babes on Broadway” but it ended up going to fellow child star Virginia Weidler) and at the time MGM already a big enough roster of popular child/teen stars like again Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney (the latter being no. 1 star for the 3rd year in a row) & other upcoming stars like Lana Turner & Ava Gardner. The movie wasn’t a success and she left MGM later that year and after another failed movie with United Artists in 1942 with “Miss Annie Rooney” she left the film industry for another 2 years until 1944 when she made a more successful comeback as a teen star in the war-time drama “Since You Went Away” co-starring Claudette Colbert, Joseph Cotten & Jennifer Jones. #shirleytemple #kathleen #classichollywood #oldhollywood #goldenageofhollywood #mgm #metrogoldwynmayer #gailpatrick #herbertmarshall #laraineday
