i finished apostles of mercy!!!!!

i’m ngl this was a much easier read than the last book, i’m really glad we didn’t have to do round 2 of the cora and ampersand communal mental breakdown. and i do think she did a good job of setting up cora’s new mindset and the new status quo

i continue to think the alien romance is the most interesting thing abt these books but that’s because im me. i will say the sex scene in this book. well. it gave me much to ponder.

nikola continues to be the best character i’m really really excited for what happens with him in the next book. and i liked all the povs even though i was kind of skeptical when i saw how many there were gonna be, i think it kept a really dense book moving along at a good clip. although i did feel like the stuff w paris started to drag a little in the middle.

anyway!!! fun book im glad it was less of a bummer than truth of the divine

The Mysterious Book that is written in an alien language : The voynich manuscript

The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex hand-written in an otherwise unknown writing system or script with. Very little use of Latin, referred to as 'Voynichese'. The vellum on which it is written has been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438), and stylistic analysis indicates it may have been composed in Italy during the Italian Renaissance. The origins, authorship, and purpose of the manuscript are debated. Various hypotheses have been suggested, including that it is an otherwise unrecorded script for a natural language or constructed language; an unread code, cypher, or other form of cryptography; or simply a meaningless hoax.

It's contents are herbal, astronomical, balneological, cosmological and pharmaceutical sections + section with recipes

So During the pandemic I co-wrote a story with Pip Ballantine, she wrote the book. It's a story close to my heart about survival.

It's surreal starting out as an alien blogger on tumblr, turn podcaster, turn producer, turn consultant and now turn author. In the span of just 3 years I have been so very honoured to write something that ties so strongly to different parts of Alien, through our eyes. This is a dream come true!

Two ivory-white spikes shot upward from his back and rib cage, bursting out between her splayed fingers. Shocked into immobility, she could only stare as his entire back ruptured, the split rib cage spreading in opposite directions as if pulled apart by a pair of giant hands. Fountaining blood gushed over her, causing her to stumble backward, one hand feeling for her own mouth. A placenta-like sac oozed from the now-dead private’s insides, rising and expanding from his back like a fleshy balloon. She screamed and flecks of blood flew from her lips. Ledward’s blood. Ripped open from within, the sac tore lengthwise. The creature that emerged was small, about the size of an ordinary house cat. With its white, almost translucent flesh and elongated, vaguely humanoid skull, it was a choice vision from Hell. Mucus and bits of dead Ledward dripped from its head and flanks. As it rose, limbs unfolded from joints, revealing slender arms and legs glistening with slick afterbirth. A long, pointed tail uncoiled. There were no eyes or ears, but a small puckered circle indicated the presence of an as yet unformed mouth. The skin was smooth, slick. A nauseatingly sweet smell, like the aroma of a bad narcotic, spread through the medbay. While blood continued to pump from the private’s destroyed body, the flow began to slow. Not quite dead but much less than alive, what remained of Ledward abruptly jerked forward, then contorted backward across the med bed. Tumbling off but still halfway held to the platform by the single safety strap around his waist, he twisted once again. A single loud report filled the bay as his back snapped.

i’m sorry but the romance in this book is soooooo ICKYYYYYYYYYY the optics of rich older man taking in a desperate traumatized young ingenue with nobody to turn to is so badddddddddd i can’t get over it

like!!! if my friend was telling me about this relationship i would be like Get Away From Himmmmmmmmmm i would be plotting his downfall i am so seriousssss. and i get that like the point is that her relationship to ampersand is getting abusive and he’s already kind of a patriarchal figure to her and he’s somebody who’s wielding his power against her and making her trauma worse and kaveh is somebody who has kind of worked past that trauma and is in a place to help her but also!!! what if she was in a relationship with somebody who wasn’t a patriarchal figure with a lot of power over her what then!!! i see such a beautiful alternate future in this possibility. one where i don’t have to go “eughhhhhhhh” every couple pages.

and i get you’re not supposed to love this relationship. and that just like ampersand and cora it’s two desperate people entering into an unwise relationship due to their overwhelming need for connection but i just think like. you’re getting that in metaphor w ampersand and cora i don’t really understand why we have to literalize it
