a human in space, what will he do? au
Humans will pack-bond with anything. At first, George thought this was an exaggeration. The Universal Council of Aliens (UCA) had many scholars and their database had tons of detailed information on almost every recorded alien species in the universe. They did a lot of research to be able to bridge the cultural and knowledge gap between many species. However, as George has been finding out over the past few months, they were grossly misinformed about humans. Having a human friend has taught George that humans are both scarier and stupider than first thought – emphasis on the stupidity.
Not only did Dream seem to have no sense of natural self preservation, was extremely reckless, and dangerously curious and emotional – he also seemed downright indestructible. Dream had explained to George that humans were actually very easy to kill – and the fact that Dream thought that but still did stupid things was concerning – but George couldn’t believe it. Humans might have been easy to kill on their home planet, but they were much stronger than any other alien species George knew of. At the very least, Dream hadn’t died yet, and that proved George’s beliefs.
But despite witnessing Dream making numerous idiotic decisions over several years, nothing even came close to what he was doing right now.
“Dream,” George hissed, “that is a silverstis!”
“Kitty!” Dream exclaimed excitedly.
George did not know what a “kitty” was, as he was still learning English, but Dream sounded way too excited to see a huge, dangerous, feral silverstis. The thing was half the size of George and probably weighed just as much as, if not more, than him. Its fur was an array of colours patched together, looking like it could blend in perfectly with the native plants. It had long, sharp, retractable claws, and it had more pointed teeth than George was comfortable with. At the very least, it was stuck behind reinforced metal bars, but George still had plenty of reason to worry as Dream rushed over to the cage and stuck his fingers through the metal.
George thought he was about to witness his best friend lose several of his fingers, but he was once again surprised by how fast human reflexes were. The silverstis hissed and lunged at Dream through the bars but Dream easily pulled away. Then he cooed at the dangerous creature, like it was a beloved pet.
Whatever a pet was, anyway. George was still trying to grasp the idea of a pet in human culture, much less a beloved one. He didn’t understand what their purpose was beyond costing resources and taking up time, but sometimes humans did things that weren’t useful or needed; they were weird like that. George wasn’t going to question it anymore than he needed to.
“Aww, are you a feisty little girl? You’re probably just grumpy because you’re in a cage, aren’t you? Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of there.” George understood nothing Dream was saying, his English too quick and too mumbled to make sense of much. He thought he caught “girl” and the pronoun “you” a few times, though he didn’t know why Dream would be speaking to the animal like it was a person. Silverstis were proven to be much less intelligent and cognitively aware than other advanced species. They were just wild animals.
Still, Dream kept talking to the silverstis like it was a person, coaxing it out of a hiss and making it tilt its head in curiosity. George just about had an aneurysm when Dream grabbed two metal bars, pulled, and easily bent them apart. The silverstis flinched and hissed in surprise, and then when they realized Dream wasn’t trying to hurt them, their rounded ears perked up.
“I’m going to name her Patches!” Dream said happily.
It took a few seconds for George to translate the English word into Common.
“Why would you name something after a noun?” George asked, then his brain caught up to the implications of what Dream just said. “Wait, no, we’re not keeping her – it. Ugh, it’s a wild animal. It’s not a person. And it’s way too dangerous.”
Dream looked at George from where he was kneeling on the floor, though even on his knees he was still slightly taller than the Draegal. He did that thing where he widened his eyes and his pupils got bigger, his bottom lip jutting out slightly. George had no idea why it was so effective at swaying him, but he couldn’t stand seeing that expression on Dream. It made him feel guilty and immediately want to give into any stupid request Dream had. Curse Dream and his stupid human looks and cuteness. Ugh.
“Fine, but if it eats Sapnap, I’m not going to be the one responsible.”
