Here’s what makes that theory not make sense: (even though the entire series continuing without Elena is non-sensical but whatever) First of all, I don’t think Damon would compel her to leave everyone she loves behind. Bonnie, Caroline, Matt, Stefan, Alaric, even Jo. Like it just doesn’t make sense. Second of all, I think that the compelling to forget/leave town scenario would be too repetitive. Too predictable. They did it with Jeremy already. And Elena was already compelled to forget once this season. Twice would be overkill.  And Lastly, I still think that his selflessness is what is going to bring all her memories back. I’m still holding on to that. I don’t believe that Elena would exit the show without getting her memories back first. So, I’m still going with we just don't know what going to happen and all speculation will be wrong to me until proven otherwise.
