Hello. I've been considering supporting the idea that fandom is not a safe space on the grounds that I am sick to death of everyone calling fandom toxic. I'm a legitimate autistic fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, and everywhere I've been, I have had a price put on my head for expressing myself. Is my position correct or is there something missing? I'm also asexual.

“Fandom” is and always has been far too large to be a “safe space.” Safe spaces must be clearly delineated with clear expectations and clear consequences for failing to meet those expectations in order to be “safe” in any meaningful way.

Let’s say we’re talking about a room in a school that advertises itself as a “safe space” for autistic students. Some autistic people need to engage in verbal stimming or foot-stomping or other noisy types of stim. Some autistic people need zero audio input in order to escape unwanted external stimulation. So already we’ve established that you can’t have a “safe space” for all autistic people at once. Rather than call that room “safe for autistic students,” it should say if it is a quiet room, or if it is a place to stim freely without restraint.

If you expand your safe space to try to accommodate more neurotypes, and then to include various other disabilities, and then to include people suffering from different traumas, and then to include different marginalized groups...you can see where this is going. People are going to have perfectly legitimate needs that conflict! No large public space is ever going to be perfectly “safe” for everyone at all times. Safe spaces are small and specific. Fandom is not and never will be a safe space. It’s just too big.

(I’m not sure what you’re asking as far as being a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, or what that has to do with autism or asexuality, since I know literally nothing about that fandom.)

For those who missed it, Twitch and Blizzard have partnered to bring fans the All Access pass. The pass includes command center view which provides alternate in game angles, real time stats, private chatroom for pass owners, and post match Q/A sessions with players. The pass also includes twitch emotes and badges as well as in game content such as player icons and three OWL skins (McCree, Soldier 76 and Moira). To sweeten the deal even more, yesterday it was announced that pass owners will have access to 12 away skins in game. The All Access pass is currently the ONLY way to acquire away skins. The pass is 30$ and lasts for one season.
