Stanley gets a protection spell cast on him after helping a nice witch cross the road and funnily enough it is far from protection. He had expected something cool like super strengh, tougher skin or- heck! Maybe some smarts spare for him! But Nope!
Stanley Pines gets to turn into a child. Great.
He is vaguely aware of who he is when he's a child at first but for some reason he doesn't turn back. The nice (if this could be called nice) told him it would activate whenever he needed but he doesn't exactly need to remain a kid to find a way out of this town- In fact, he very much needs to be an adult to get out of this town. To drive, eat and- Oh look another kid his age! Maybe they could be frie- wait what?
Point is, he is losing himself...sort of. It is like watching the kid in him take the reigns as he sits back and...enjoys it. It's relaxing, it's comfortable, it's...nice. He is not the one dealing with the hunger, with the fear and with the sudden need to cry- with this kid version of him, he has no need to hold back the tears.
So imagine his surprise when the kid turns to him and actuay talks to him-
"You have to help him! You have to!"
Heck- imagine his shock when he's back in control and the first thing he sees is his own twin brother in some kind of trouble.
(Or: Stanley can change from a kid into an adult.
I imagine the protection spell just makes his older self the protector of the young one, in a way- the young one the protector of the elder. They can interact in the mindscape but Stanley never tried to)
