An edit with layers. This can be as simple as a background with a text layer.
Photoshop (I’ll be using Photoshop 2021). This also works with Photoshop Elements.
Difficulty rating: ★☆☆☆☆
I have explained previously how to use clipping masks to create 3D icons. This time I’ll be showing you how to use clipping masks to edit photos and change colours of particular layers. Once you get your head around clipping masks you can get really creative with your edits! Hopefully I can help with this tutorial.
Tutorial under the cut:
All of my edits, be they icons, headers or graphics, start off like this. I have cut out the character (in this case it’s Lisbon from The Mentalist) and she’s a separate layer from the background. I have also got a trio of adjustment layers for this demonstration.
The adjustment layers are affecting each layer that’s below them, including Lisbon and the background.
I want my adjustments to just affect the Lisbon layer and to do this I will use clipping masks. have three ways to go about this:
1) The first and simplest way is to hold down the ALT key and hover your mouse between the Brightness/Contrast layer and Lisbon. The pointer will turn into a square with a right-angle arrow pointing downwards. Click when the box and arrow appear and the clipping mask is activated. Click again and it is deactivated. Very simple and works in Photoshop Elements too.
2) The second way is to highlight the Brightness/Contrast layer. Click on the box and arrow that appears at the bottom of the Properties box, first in the row alongside the trash bin and the all-seeing eye of layer visibility. Click again and the clipping mask deactivates.
3) Thirdly, you can simply right-click on the layer you want to turn into a clipping mask and click on Create Clipping Mask. This is the slowest way so I don’t use this very often!
So to recap: start with the layer that is just above the one you want affected by your edits, and work your way up the layers to the top. Once each layer has the clipping mask activated, they’ll have an arrow pointing downwards like this:
As a result Lisbon now looks like this! All of my adjustment layers are only affecting Lisbon while the background is unchanged.
Clipping masks don’t just work with adjustment layers - I use them all of the time with colour fill layers. Here I have a colour fill layer set to Screen. Right now it as affecting both Lisbon and the background.
Once I activate the clipping mask, however, just Lisbon is affected.
Clipping masks also work with text layers. I’ve typed out Lisbon’s name here and now I have copied over a texture layer.
I used a clipping mask so that the texture only showed on the text layer. I then added a black & white adjustment layer on top. Just like the adjustment and colour fill layers for Lisbon above, these two layers are only affecting the text layer directly underneath them.
Now my text looks like this:
Another thing to note is that you can change opacities and blending modes on any of these layers for different effects. I changed my text layer to Linear Burn and now it looks like this:
Note: If you hide a layer (toggling that all-seeing eye of layer visibility), any clipping masks attached to it will hide as well.
And that’s it! Thanks for reading this tutorial, I hope you learned something. Just don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun!
