Ricky rolled over, groaning as he flicked on the lamp on his bedside table. The light illuminated the shadowy corners of his bedroom where his torments waited, the specters of what ifs and maybes that wouldn’t leave him alone.
He had been trying to sleep for what felt like hours now.
His eyes had been burning as he stared at his phone, struggling to stay awake. But once his head hit the pillow and he shut his eyes, thoughts swirled inside his brain like a tornado, wrecking every attempt to calm the storm and sleep.
It’s your own fault, he chastised himself as he stared up at the slowly moving fan, forms of shadow and light weaving around and around on the ceiling.

“Hey, sweetie, what was it you wanted from the fridge?” Ricky’s voice echoed from the kitchen and Gina huffed out a laugh.
“I knew you were going to forget as soon as you walked in there. What happened to the guy who never forgot a thing I said?” She leaned her head back against the pillow and continued knitting, the motion of the needles and the looping of the yarn almost putting her to sleep.

never thought i’d meet you here (it could be love)

Sunshine broke through the clouds illuminating his notebook that mostly consisted of scribbled outlines and doodles from the moments where his muse escaped him and he grew bored. He glanced up, finally noticing the beauty of the day now that he wasn’t so focused on the poem that was hanging on the edges of his subconscious like words on the tip of his tongue.
Ricky liked the park on days like these. It was calm and serene without the distractions that a bustling coffee shop or his apartment could bring. At home the tv would always be on, a video game flashing across the screen as his roommate played hours and hours of Minecraft, headset on while he yelled out directions to his online partner. Not exactly conducive to quiet reflection, and he needed at least some silence in order to focus.

A door slammed down the hall and they jerked apart, Ricky releasing a shaky breath and trying not to look too closely at Gina’s face for fear he might never leave her side.
“Um, I think Ashlyn’s waiting at her locker for me. I’ll, I’ll see you later, okay?” Her lips lifted in a brief smile before she was jogging down the steps and out into the hallway, leaving Ricky wondering if keeping them a secret was the best plan.

flufftober day 7: corn maze
“Why do they call it a corn maze…? Because this does not look like corn to me.” He poked the surface with a curious finger, turning to her with a look of confusion.
“That's because it’s not corn, Ricky, it’s hay.” Gina huffed out a laugh, dodging when Ricky tried to swipe at her with one hand.
“It doesn’t make sense at all.”
“It’s Salt Lake City, there’s not a lot of corn around here. They probably just used the term universally. Besides, a hay maze sounds a little silly, don’t you think?”
