The Power of Video
AllThingsD posted an article about the power of video in 2013 (here), that I wanted to summarize in this throwback. Video has the unique ability to depict emotion, elicit emotion, and compel viewers to act - resulting in "social stickiness." (YouTube outperforms Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest for user attention!). For an example of the power of video, watch this, which shares an "emotional truth that is difficult to describe with words."
Digital video has created some of the largest viral entertainment events in recent culture - think: “Gangnam Style,” “Harlem Shake,” “Call Me Maybe,” and “What Does the Fox Say?” which have eclipsed other media and social experiences.
The rise in popularity of video stars and “vloggers” (PewDiePie, Jenna Marbles & Ray William Johnson) is also compelling. The top 10 YouTube personalities have a combined subscriber base of 103.9 million — more than Netflix and HBO combined. Ultimately, video is reshaping the social web, where authentic content wins, and moving content builds thriving communities.
