Sparkling Violetear by Allan Drewitt Via Flickr: Violetears are some of the most aggressive hummingbirds at feeders. Like this individual, they prefer to keep very close to their favoured feeder, adopting a threatening posture with ear coverts raised whenever another bird approaches, and usually driving off competitors before they have a chance to feed. Looking closely at this photograph I was surprised by the size of this bird’s feet – they are astonishingly tiny. An adaptation to aerial feeding means that hummingbirds can no longer walk or climb with their feet, which serve only for perching, and the relative size of their legs and feet is much smaller than other birds, even when taking into account that most hummingbirds are diminutive in the first place!
