               “Chapter 7: Homelessness and uprootedness” - M. Allan Fox            

“Home: A Very Short Introduction” (2016) is a book written by Michael Allen Fox, born on 7th May 1940, an American/Canadian/Australian philosopher. He studied for a Bachelor of Arts at Cornell University and then he did Masters of Arts and PhD at the University of Toronto.

The subject studied at the Lectures is “Home” and in this book’s chapter 7th, Allen explores the meaning of the term “Homeless”. The writer divides the chapter into 7 topics to make it easier to understand.

Allen Fox states that “the absence of home helps us better appreciate the significance of home.” In his opinion, the meaning “Homeless” is not only the image of urban people who are doing it rough. There are “those who chronically have no home; those who no longer have a place to call home […]; migrants who have had more than one place to call  home […] and those who are spiritually homeless.”

In my opinion, the excerpt that describes everything and connects with the lectures’ topic is the last one (“An afterthought”). Allen states the following:

“[…] we are all wanderers. We symbolically carry our homes on our backs […] - for the meanings and associations of home are always with us and affect our orientation in space and time.”

That being said, the concept of “Home” always or almost always has a different meaning to every single person. Home can be from a physical space/place to an emotional state (“they were at home not only in the place they inhabited but also within their own skins and minds”); and for others… they maybe cannot even feel “home” at all. They “become somewhat a lost soul”.

In my opinion, this reading opens up space to more knowledge about the meaning of the word “Homeless” because if you think it can be associated with other different situations and that the meaning of this word is not strict at all. It makes the reader more openminded about this concept.
