The GOP-controlled North Carolina State Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked certification of liberal justice Allison Riggs' 2024 victory, allowing the Republican who lost the race to present his argument about why 60,000 ballots cast in the race should be thrown out. Riggs, an incumbent on the court, defeated Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin by 748 votes—a narrow victory that was affirmed by two recounts. But Griffin is refusing to concede and instead wants the court to throw out 60,000 ballots based on a ridiculous claim that those voters were illegally registered. Griffin claims those voters did not put their Social Security or driver's license numbers on their voter registration forms, rendering their votes invalid. State and national Republicans used that same argument to try and purge 225,000 voters from the rolls in North Carolina before ballots were cast in the 2024 election. But both the State Board of Elections and a federal judge ruled against the Republicans in that case. Now Griffin wants the court to retroactively disqualify voters—many of them Democratic—so that he can be declared the winner of a race he lost.

My whole life, there was not a single politician who claimed an election was rigged (my first presidential election was Al Gore won the state of Florida but Bush jr dad’s buddies on the Supreme Court decided otherwise but, that’s a story for another day) and ever since, 🤔 hmmm who was it? Oh yea!! It was the failed businessman turned reality tv personality who is a highly unserious immature f*ck and was claiming the 2016 election was going to be rigged until he won. I think we all recall what happened in 2020 with the insurrection and the fraudulent electors… I digress…
This has been a tactic of late. Because millennials, GenZ and whoever are the most open minded, accepting, diverse, generations, with access to knowledge that our parents did not have, we tend to be liberal. We don’t believe that he earth was made in 7 days, some guy lived in the belly of a wail, or that some old man in the sky watched me at all times. We have spirituality, we also have science that answers the questions that were unanswerable a few centuries ago and don’t need mythology to explain sh*t for us… Again. I digress.
Because Republicans can’t win playing by the rules, they either cheat, or change the rules mid stream. Don’t believe me? Check out the save act, look to see how much voter fraud has been found, look at every red state and their restrictive voting laws. Republicans want to make it harder to vote, they want to purge registration lists, they want to throw out votes that aren’t for them, or now, they simply say it was rigged.
Tell me! Your a noncitizen, you have a single vote out of 170 million votes, if you decide to try and cast a vote illegally you get thrown in prison for at least 5 years, over a $100,000 fine and more than likely deported. Are you to risk all that for 1/170,000,000 of the overall vote? I didn’t think so.
The “traditional” ideology of the so called conservatives (although I’m not sure what there conserving because it ain’t the rule of low, it’s not democratic principles, it’s certainly not the environment, it can’t be family values so… might want to change their label) is irrelevant, it’s debunked, a fraud, fake. So to retain power they cheat, they disenfranchise, they restrict voters from their ability to participate in the process of voting.
So this smug prick claiming he was cheated, then trying to nullify the votes of 65,000 North Carolinians, a large chunk being service members overseas, finally having to concede… It’s great!!!
You can’t betray your constituents and get votes from them. You can’t alienate anyone who isn’t white and expect them to vote for you. You can’t make policies that go against the interests of those you represent. You can’t be bad at governing and expect to win.
Most of all. You can’t love your country only when you win.
You change with the times. The times don’t change with you.

Good news in North Carolina!
So for those of you who haven't been following, last November a Democrat won an important Supreme Court Race.
In an attempt to steal the election after the fact in order to retain control of the government forever, the Republicans retroactively changed the rules of the election after the fact to throw out legally cast votes by citizens who did absolutely nothing wrong, which they decided to disenfranchise on the grounds they were more likely to vote Democrat.
They also gave voters arbitrarily disenfranchised to contest their ineligibility, so that in future Republicans can just throw out any votes they want without cause and nothing can be done to stop them.
So this is pretty blatantly illegal.
Republicans provided no evidence of fraud and just assumed the Republican packed courts would decide against the people retroactively disenfranchised as an exercise of pure political power and self interest in ending free and fair election in North Carolina in favor of permanent one party rule, as in future they'd be able to just randomly throw out as many votes as they liked so a Republican would always "win" regardless of how many people actually voted for them.
Democrats won by a thousand votes? Declare two thousand Democratic votes invalid without cause or proof as they just outlawed appeal or any other judicial recourse to prevent it.
This is scary shit and the fate of Democracy in a state hung on it.

Six months after Election Day, a federal judge ordered the North Carolina Board of Elections to certify Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs as the winner of the fiercely contested race for her seat on the state Supreme Court.
Riggs has been clinging to a narrow 734-vote lead and fighting off efforts from Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin to flip that result through all manner of machinations and after-the-fact changes to the rules.
In a new opinion Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard Myers thoroughly rejected Griffin’s attempts to rewrite the election rules after the election was held: “That principle will be familiar to anyone who has played a sport or board game. You establish the rules before the game. You don’t change them after the game is done,” Myers ruled.

DEMOCRATIC LEADERS ARE CONFIDENT they can retake the House in the 2026 midterms. But that optimism is increasingly clouded by fear that a blitz of legal challenges from Republicans could complicate or even upend their wins. In conversations with leading campaign operatives and Democratic-allied lawyers, there is a growing concern that the party is not effectively focused on—and resourced-up for—the legal fights ahead around voting rights, election laws, and election certifications.
Such legal warfare has popped up in every recent election cycle. But these Democrats warn that Republicans’ post-election legal challenges in 2026 could be substantially more aggressive than in the past. Already, the party has seen how that could play out. North Carolina Democrats have been quietly struggling to regain their financial footing after the contentious legal battle to defend Justice Allison Riggs’s November election to the state supreme court. Riggs’s GOP opponent, Judge Jefferson Griffin, spent six months attempting to get thousands of votes tossed out in order to reverse his loss. Riggs ultimately prevailed when Griffin finally conceded in May. But that win—celebrated as a positive sign that the legal system would ultimately protect the integrity of elections—came at a cost.
Riggs’s campaign alone spent over $1 million on legal fees, according to a person close to her campaign. And the state party is still sorting out how to pay off its own bills related to defending the court seat. Party officials accused Griffin and allied Republicans of deliberately using the legal challenge to try and bankrupt them. “I absolutely believe that one of the strategies in the Riggs case was to try and reduce the amount of resources that the party had to work with because if you’re spending money on lawsuits, you can’t spend money on other things that are just as important,” said Reyna Walters-Morgan, a North Carolina-based member of the Democratic National Committee who serves as the vice chair for civic engagement and voter participation.
Incumbent GOP Sen. Thom Tillis’s announcement on Sunday that he would not run for re-election in 2026 underscored that point. The midterms in the state would be contentious no matter what, but with Tillis’s seat now up for grabs, there will be a spotlight on races further down the ballot, too. Yet state Democrats have been slow to get moving: Despite Riggs’s victory, the legal challenge ultimately limited Democrats from being able to get a headstart on raising money for the midterm cycle. The fear among some Democratic officials is that Republicans will attempt similar challenges on a mass scale next year—and that the national party won’t be able to underwrite the defenses against them. The North Carolina Democratic Party received very little financial help from the Democratic National Committee, according to an operative in the state. And the future prospects for a cash infusion from the national party appear even bleaker. The Republican National Committee reported entering June with $72 million on hand, nearly five times the DNC’s $15 million stockpile. “I don’t think that [DNC officials] are fully prepared to help states even do the basic litigation prep work that it takes,” said the operative. “We are going to lose a lot of races probably in states where if they had the money, they could contest what Republicans are doing.”
Beyond the DNC’s coffers, there are additional fears about the election law battles to come. Among them is that the party is too reliant on one big law firm—Elias Law Group—to handle the bulk of the legal strategy and hasn’t invested enough in creating a network of lawyers in the states most likely to see GOP challenges. (ELG, it should be noted, did not represent Riggs in the post-election contest.) There is also fear that the incumbent president will go to extraordinary lengths to hold on to power. And not without reason: The country is only four-and-a-half years removed from January 6th.
[...] The DNC also recently created a new litigation department, hiring Dan Freeman, a veteran of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, to lead a team of three lawyers. Freeman, who started in his role last week, told The Bulwark he plans to hire more lawyers in the coming months—describing it as a significant investment compared to just a few years ago, when the DNC did not employ any lawyers in-house. “The law requires free and fair elections. I think we are well positioned to successfully protect them, but it’s going to require a lot of work—and that’s exactly why we are staffing up inside the DNC in a way that we have not done for at least thirty years,” Freeman said. He added that a more foolproof way to avoid getting bogged down in fraught legal disputes would be to take back the House by such a decisive victory as to make those GOP challenges frivolous. “If we win by wide margins, it makes it very hard to try to knock out votes in court,” said Freeman. “If all of our elections are outside the ‘margin of litigation,’ we will have a restful November and December next year, but I’m not expecting that that will be the case in every election that counts, in every election that matters to us.” Other voting rights advocacy organizations said they are getting better at coordinating across groups and with state parties, putting a particular emphasis on streamlining their operations in anticipation of the midterms. They worked together to raise national attention during Riggs’s case and were still focused on holding Griffin accountable well after the fact. One of the groups involved in Riggs’s defense, the Justice Project, is planning to run ads attacking other justices on the state supreme court who issued legal decisions helpful to Griffin’s challenge.
[...] But private conversations among Democrats about the need to invest more in legal operations have grown more urgent as Trump has ramped up his targeting of his perceived political opponents, including big law firms, universities, and Democratic campaign groups like the fundraising platform ActBlue. While some party officials are bracing for a dark turn from Trump next year should it become clear that Democrats will retake the House, other voting-rights experts say that the election threats are already happening. They point to reports that Trump’s political team has pressured Republican officials in Texas to redraw their district lines (which typically only happens at the start of each decade) to make it harder for Democrats to pick up congressional seats there next year. Republicans in Ohio are also considering redrawing their maps to knock out Democratic seats.
The Dems are fearing a GOP legal blitz around the 2026 midterm elections to prevent shenanigans like we saw in North Carolina.

A federal judge appointed by President Donald Trump ruled against the conservative nominee for a seat on North Carolina's state Supreme Court, saying in a scathing decision that he lost the election that took place more than six months ago and that the liberal justice's victory must be confirmed. Conservative nominee Jefferson Griffin lost the November state Supreme Court election to liberal Justice Allison Riggs by 734 votes, but has been appealing his loss for months. Griffin wanted the state board of elections to throw out 65,000 votes, arguing that those voters needed to show identification in order to have their ballots counted—even though no other candidate in North Carolina challenged the validity of those ballots. The conservative state Supreme Court ultimately ruled that thousands of voters who either were serving in the military or lived abroad needed to "cure" their ballots and show their identification or else their votes would be thrown out. But U.S. District Court Judge Richard Myers, who was appointed by Trump in 2019, said Griffin was improperly trying to change the rules of the election after it took place, that his challenge was bogus, and that Riggs’ victory must be certified. “You establish the rules before the game. You don’t change them after the game is done,” Myers wrote. He added that, “Permitting parties to ‘upend the set rules’ of an election after the election has taken place can only produce ‘confusion and turmoil,’” which “threatens to undermine public confidence in the federal courts, state agencies, and the elections themselves." Even some Republicans in the state had been criticizing Griffin’s effort to overturn his loss, including Pat McCrory, the last Republican governor of the state.
In Griffin v. North Carolina State Board of Elections, even the Trump-appointed justice Richard Myers isn’t buying Republican loser Jefferson Griffin’s BS tomfoolery, as he issued a ruling ordering the proper winner (Democratic nominee Allison Riggs) to be seated officially.
