“I LOVE YOU” How do you feel when you read these words or even hear these words? How do you feel if and when you say them? This post is not about hugging yourself and reciting affirmations (Hey! I’m not knocking that either ☺ This post is about the fact that when it comes to love, sometimes we just “don’t know”.
I recently engaged in discussions about the meaning of the word “LOVE”. Interestingly, it was not the conventional conversation with expected descriptors like: “unconditional” or “happiness” being bandied about. Other thoughts and responses were discussed – such as: “I don’t know what love is.” or “I don’t know what love feels like.” or “I don’t know how to show love.” or “I don’t know how to accept love.”
These conversations not only offered me insight into the people with whom I spoke, but into myself as well. I often describe Love as Truth/Source/God/Core/Trust etc. Yet even as I strive to love, I keep getting little reminders to ALLOW LOVE in my life. These reminders/breadcrumbs/gold nuggets show up for me in people I know, strangers, situations, profound experiences, unexpected exchanges, “random” words – and the list goes on and on. I see lessons in the conflicts within my personal life, in my communities, country, and this world in which I live. I keep receiving these lessons and clues to ALLOW MORE LOVE! For me, it begs the questions: “What else must I do?!” “What am I DOING wrong?”
I’m reminded that “doing” can be an expression of love; however, “doing” is not love itself. Love IS. I AM love. We ARE love. If I want to better love, better KNOW LOVE, better UNDERSTAND LOVE, better RECEIVE LOVE, and even better ACCEPT LOVE - I must better LOVE MY SELF, better KNOW MY SELF, better UNDERSTAND MY SELF, and ACCEPT MY SELF. So how do I better love myself?
My definition of love lies within my exploration, understanding and acceptance of who I AM. There is a direct correlation that I keep experiencing and witnessing. The more I grow to understand, accept and know myself (beneath the labels, experiences, judgements, assumptions, etc) - the more I allow True Love in my life (which in turn grows my ability to TRULY LOVE others.) I love THROUGH my SELF; and through my Truth/God/Source. This is loving from the inside out. When I try to love from outside of myself (from the outside in) – I create caricatures of love. In other words, when I attempt to define love by a shade of what it truly is, I cheat myself (Something like a glass replica of a diamond)
WE KNOW the real deal when it comes to TRUE LOVE. We see through these caricatures of love and know when it is not real. Caricatures of love happen when we attempt to define love - using Truths and words that are not our own. When we attempt to camouflage something that is not loving with loving words – much like spraying perfume/cologne over really REALLY bad body odour. The comedy of errors begin when we attempt to “act out” love as opposed to just “Be-ing Love”.
Now, what is “Be-ing Love”? One thing that comes to my mind is the amazing experience of simply being myself in the presence of someone – unabashed, vulnerable, powerful, light, dark, beautiful, ugly, etc (authentically me); knowing that I am seen, accepted and treasured as I AM. It is also the honour of witnessing that same authenticity and the ability to see, accept, treasure another person. The most fundamental experience of Be-ing Love is simply being my authentic self by myself - seeing myself, accepting myself, and treasuring my self as I AM.
Love is truly inexplicable. Yet the defining and expression of love has long been a human pursuit. Each of our paths to defining and expressing love is so very unique. We can journey through so much (joy, pain, adversity, abundance, religion, exploration, etc) to find and be Love. As we live life and explore this world - when in search of a reminder of what True Love looks and feels like – there are so many actions and places that can serve as reminders (Time spent in Nature, looking into the eyes of babies, looking into the eyes of animals, etc.). There is no caricature, pretense or affectation in those places. All we need is the courage to look and explore. With love - xoKeda
