For this First Thursday, June 7 at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken New Jersey, I will be bringing many of the records that I have purchased from Stan’s Square Records over the years or was given to me by Stan. As I have said before, I was a regular but as I look back I should have been far more regular. I only purchased 7-inches during the recent digs. Those three days, at the shop, also told me that as much as I loved sitting with Stan, listening to his stories, and shooting the shit I should have set aside some time for digging. I shouldn’t have been as amazed as I was, but what was in, under, behind, and between the bins, was impressive. There were records every where. In the last two hours of Sunday’s dig I asked Justin and Jeff, “Where haven’t you seen people spend much time?” (Keep in mind every record was moved around by Justin and Jeff so Justin could do his thing and sort the entire store.) They said, “In front of the counter.” So dig I did, and walked away with another 25 records. I even witnessed a very old, very dedicated digger, pass out, bleed from his mouth and when rested… he immediately began flipping records! It was scary, crazy and all I could think was, yeah, I’d probably do the same thing. Come check out my finds, have a drink, and spend a little time with Stan. #stanssquarerecords #catamountrecords #stankrause #catamount #jerseycity #doowop #soul #randb #hiphop #funk #vinyl #vinylrules @primitivesoundsystem #primitivesoundsystem #vinyljunkie #vinyl45s #recordcollection #recordcollection @collectorscum @fleamarketfunk @pat_byrne @dcstavern #dcstavern #FirstThursdays #AllVinylAllTheTime #AllVinylAsAlways @dalespix @disislim @demondrums @heidicurko
This Friday, February 23, from 9PM to 12:30AM I’ll be spinning some of my favorite records in the Wine Bar at Pet Shop. The Wine Bar at Pet Shop has become the favorite hang out of my better half and I. As always, I will be running rampant across the musical map, from one genre to the other, and in directions that make sense to me. One of those directions will be 70’s Punk. Hopefully you find it as entertaining as I do. See you there! Pet Shop 193 Newark Ave, Jersey City and if you are hungry, the food is great. petshopjc dot com Phone: (201) 984-2170 #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #recordcollection #recordcollector #PetShopJC @petshopjc #petshopwinebar #DTJC #JerseyCity #AllVinylAllTheTime #punkrock #punk45
Roy Ayers - Coffy (Polydor cat. PD 5048) A perfect record is allowed to come in shitty packaging because we buy records to listen to the music, not necessarily to look at the cover. BUT, sometimes a perfect record has everything. “Coffy,” and the music contained in its grooves, comes wrapped in one of my favorite action film illustrations by brilliant poster artist George Akimoto. Soundtracks are odd because not every track has to kick ass since the music must be appropriate for the movie. Luckily for us, Roy Ayers and company flawlessly do both. If you have never seen this film you need to put down whatever digital distraction you are currently staring at and figure out a way to experience it. The one, the only, Pam Grier, a woman who seems to amazing to be real, stars in this vigilante action-hero film. Coffy kicks ass from start to finish avenging the death of her sister. I have been in search of an OG copy since I first heard the entire soundtrack sometime in the 80’s. I picked up this copy at Hudson Valley Vinyl this past weekend as we made our through several upstate NY cities and shops. Hear this and many other now finds Thursday, February 1st at this month’s First Thursday at D.C.’s Tavern in Hoboken, NJ #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #recordcollection #recordcollector #FirstThursday @dcstavern @dalespix @jcolangelo01 @la_bry @disislim @tfool #Hoboken #AllVinylAllTheTime #DCsTavern #RoyAyers #HarryWhitaker #PamGrier #Coffy
This Thursday, January 18 from 9AM - 12 noon on DJ Trouble’s program on WFMU, I will be DJing between discussions with DJ Trouble, legendary Latin music artist Joe Bataan and Jonathan Goldman, leader of the group Spanglish Fly. It has been a while since I played a Latin only set. Playing some of my old favorites and recent finds will be a blast. This is the fourth time we are doing this so it is getting more difficult to pull a completely unique set. Search for the previous sets on FMU’s site. Packed in the 45 box are some known rare gems like Johnny Zamot’s incredible two-sider “Boogaloo Frog” b/w “Are You Ready?” Willie Rodriguez’s “Marty Tune,” and one of the funkiest versions of “Last Tango In Paris.” Tune in, turn on and if the mood hits you… DANCE! I have a lot of new records including some amazing LPs. Although the sets are mostly Boogaloo I am bringing Funk, Soul, Salsa, and Guajira to rounding out the sound. #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #recordcollection #recordcollector #AllVinylAllTheTime #DJTrouble @giantpompom #thisisthemodernworld #WFMU @WFMU #JoeBataan @TheRealJoeBataan #LatinMusic #Boogaloo #Salsa #Soul #Funk #LatinRecords #JonathanGoldman @spanglishflyboogaloo #JohnnyZamot #Willie Rodriguez #TonyRamos #JoeCotto #JulioGuiterrez
Burt Ward - "Boy Wonder I Love You” b/w “Orange Colored Sky” (MGM cat. K 13632 (Special Disc Jockey Record / Not For Sale)) So, for Christmas, my brother got me one of the worst records ever released… how fucking awesome is that?! This is a weird one even for the Batman box. Burt Ward singing over a song Arranged and Conducted by Frank Zappa, produced by Tom Wilson and written by Milton DeLugg and Willie Stein. Neither of these songs are good and Burt Ward can’t sing to save his life. The words that Ward is saying over “Boy Wonder I Love You… written by Frank Zappa, are oddball and creepy but seem to be written to make us believe he is cool and attractive to the ladies. Everything about this is weird including where the record came from. Holdfast in Asbury Park bought a collection that consisted of JUST Frank Zappa (and related) records. It was truly the most focused record collection ever but for that reason alone to is also one of the strangest. “So what do you kids want to listen to today…from Frank Zappa.” Thank you Michael for knocking off a very rare record and to Joe for picking out the cleanest promo (yup, there were multiples). Merry Christmas presents! #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #recordcollection #recordcollector #AllVinylAllTheTime #BurtWard #FrankZappa #MiltonDelugg #BatSongs #BatmanMusic #MusicofBatman #DavidAxelrod #BatmanandRobin #BoyWonder #MerryChristmas @holdfastasburypark #holdfastrecords
Joann Garrett - Just A Taste (Chess cat. LPS - 1548 (DJ Copy)) Sometime in the late 80’s I was flipping through a small box of records in Finyl Vinyl. The record had what looked like a stock layout with that steel 3D lettering you have seen a million times before. The background color was so dark green it was difficult to read the type. The record was Jo Ann Garrett, “Can You Deal With That.” I played it through a few times before I noticed it read, “Produced by Andre Williams.” I was hooked. I picked up four or five more before I noticed a copy of her LP on the wall of A1. Even then it was expensive. Over the years I saw a few copies but they were beat up and not worth picking up. Thirty years later I found the copy that belongs with me. Brewerytown Beats posted a pic of it on Instagram and I immediately messaged Max. I love when an artist makes a record as opposed to an album of songs. Sometimes that means the artist gets to do some experimental stuff and it also gives the a chance to fail a little. Not everything on the LP “works,” but that is what makes it so great and interesting. Both Joann Garrett’s and Issac Hayes’ version of “Walk On By,” came out in 1969 and both are trip as fuck… I wonder who did acid first? I’m thinking Andre, just listen to the amazing, “It’s No Secret.” Hobo-X gets us started and Brian Dely pours what you need. #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #recordcollection #recordcollector #FirstThursday @dalespix @la_bry @disislim @tfool #joanngarrett #andrewilliams @brewerytownbeats #brewerytownbeats #Funk #Soul #Punk #PowerPop #RandB #AllVinylAllTheTime #DCsTavern @DCsTavern
