GLSEN’S Ally Week begins today!

“Ally is a verb. Allyship is not performative, it’s action-oriented. Being an ally means taking action in solidarity with LGBTQ students and responding to their self-determined requests, for example, using the correct pronouns when referring to classmates or signing petitions demanding LGBTQ inclusion or policy change at school. Being an ally also means that LGBTQ students act in solidarity with other students who hold identities that are marginalized or attacked in our society.”

And my little brother painted his nails rainbow. I was like that cute but you might get harassed at school so be careful. And he was like, "if anyone tries to locker slam me or something, I'll just make weird sex noises until they go away." I was wHeeZing. He's only 12.

Happy Ally Week. I know there’s a lot of often ridiculous talk surrounding LGBT+ allies but I still think you guys are cool and pretty important. In my years as an ally as a little kid (12 years old, who started out as an ally before fully figuring out how gay I really am,) I legitimately risked suspension trying to start a Day of Silence in my junior high because I knew the implications of me being gay wouldn’t affect me or my relationship with anyone. It was for the gay kids (which I totally wasn’t at the time) who couldn’t do it. 

So this one if for you, straight (and sometimes not-so-straight) allies. Like, in all things, don’t be an asshole (but assholary isn’t exclusive to straights *cough*dansavage*cough*).
