summary: A late night phone call and some ill-timed god magic leads to some uncomfortable revelations. The Johnson brothers soon learn the unpleasant truth that scars that run so deeply are not so easily healed.

Mike's in the bathroom in the middle of his bedtime routine when he hears his phone.

"Who is it?" he calls through to Michele, toothbrush clamped between his teeth and mouth full of foamy toothpaste.

"Axl," she replies. "Want me to answer?"

Mike stares hard at his own reflection with the toothbrush hanging crookedly from his mouth. Does he want her to answer? That question is much more loaded than Michele realises.

Over the years he's developed a sort of traffic light system when it comes to fielding his brothers' late night phone calls. Ty is green, chances are if Ty calls at strange hours it's almost definitely some kind of emergency that needs immediate action. Anders is firmly in the red, he only calls when he's drunk, feeling belligerent, and spoiling for a fight. And Axl hovers somewhere between Ty and Anders in the amber zone. Depending on the time of year and Axl’s general vibe, it could go either way. Sometimes it’s a real crisis. Sometimes he’s drunk at a pub quiz and needs an 'old person answer', stat.

I am rewatching The Almighty Johnsons (I am currently halfway through season 2) and since I am one of those fans that need a coherent time line, I started wondering about age differences between the Johnsons brothers

Elisabeth/Agnetha shot through (I love this expression, which I hadn’t heard before) when Mike was 21, Ty was 14, and Axl was 6. So far there isn't a lot of evidence of Anders age. He was next after Mike to turn 21, and Ty gave Axel the family sword, so Anders is clearly the second oldest brother. This means he was somewhere between 15 and 20 when their mom left. I feel like he wouldn’t be too much younger than Mike, since I got the impression that he slept with Val shortly after becoming Bragi, and that it had only a been a few years since Rob ended up in a coma.

Anders' life started with pain, suffering, abandonment and abuse. To cope he turned to what would become his addictions, and soon his addictions turned on him. A spiral began that not even a God could stop, a spiral of drinking, drugs, and sex lead to the suffering of those who loved him despite it all, and kept him in a constant position of precariousness. Soon the mistakes are at every turn, his crutches at the next. The question begins to burn in him, are his addictions all that he is? And will he ever get it right?
