Australia: Hayes bullish on Almoonqith chance Almoonqith finished fourth in the Caulfield Cup PICTURE: Dubai Racing Club By Mark Scully in Australia 6:06PM 27 OCT 2016
Cavalryman, a true warrior of Godolphin's, suffered a fracture during the Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan yesterday, 28 February 2015.
He was sent off as the favourite in the race he had won a year ago, but was pulled up by William Buick down the backstraight. The race was eventually won by Almoonqith and Paul Hanagan.
The son of Halling and Silverswood, foaled on 9 May 2006, ran 39 times in a career which spanned seven years. He was one of the only horses still running to have faced greats of the last decade such as Sea The Stars, to whom he ran third in the 2009 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
His lone Group 1 win and the peak of his middle-distance career came in the 2009 Grand Prix de Paris. He then became a top stayer and went on to win the 2013 Dubai Gold Cup on World Cup night. Last year he landed the Princess of Wales's at Newmarket's Julycourse and the Goodwood Cup at Glorious Goodwood.
Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, speaking to Godolphin's official website, said: "He was a real character in the yard and was treasured, not only by me, but by everyone here - all of the team; we are very upset by the tragic news. He had a wonderful career and he will be hugely missed." More information here.
This is so sad. I was too devastated to post this yesterday, in fact I still am... Rest In Peace, my sweet boy. 9 May 2006 - 28 February 2015
