They were a part of the Almoravid dynasties that occupied Spain🇪🇸. As documented by Muslim and Spanish scholars. El Cid, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, he's documented as a great Castillian knight and warlord. Some of you no doubt have heard of him or seen his statue which I've two pictures of while at Balboa's Park in San Diego or the other statue while in Burgos, Spain. Nugaymath Turquia, you don't even know that name and if you've ever seen it, her link to El Cid and his death at the battle in Valencia aren't made at all. The Christians called him El Campeador, which meant the champion, and in old Spanish meant the master of the battlefield. Well Nugaymath Turquia meant star of the archers of Turkey. Nugaymath was an excellent archer and she was putting in work in Valencia. They claim El Cid died of starvation, have to check the Muslim accounts. It's not clear exactly what Nugaymath Turquia looked like, but what is clear is that her and her 300 soldiers were black women, as the Muslim and Spanish scholars attest too. They came, they saw, and they kicked ass. She could've looked like any of those 5 Berber and 1 Haratin woman. It's amazing how a certain group of people have tried to write out the original indigenous black Berbers. If you google Berbers now all you see is non black Berbers. Online who do you see talking crazy and claiming to be Berbers and the faces of North Africa. Non black faces. To begin with the history of medieval to modern Morocco, there's the Almoravids.

The medieval history of Morocco underwent a profound shift with the rise of the Al-Murabitun, usually known by the Europeanized variant Almoravids. The equivalent in English would be 'Fortificationists' or 'Barrackists'. The Almoravids arose as a puritanical movement among Amazigh tribes and have a very direct parallel in some ways with the Safavid order that would build the basis of modern Iran. They existed before the rise of gunpowder and were able to consolidate rule first in what's now Morocco, and then to drive into what's now Spain.

Of course for Black history their relevance is that in the middle of all this the Emir of the Al-Murabitun decided the Ghana Empire was squatting on his trade routes and he sent his armies down to destroy it and he succeeded. The dynamics propelling the Al-Murabitun were part of a broader sequence of convulsions in the Muslim world that brought to power the Fatimids, the various Seljuk Sultanates, the Abuyyids, and marked the high to late medieval era in the Dar-Al-Islam. The Almoravids were very much an aggressive force seeking to expand like other states and movements of this kind, and like their counterparts in the Christian world, really.

They were also part of the rise of a very aggressive Islamic fundamentalism that with their even more puritanical Almohad successors marked the demise of the brief era of Muslim toleration of Jews and the first glory days of Sepharad.

A lot, considering the fall of one great empire was the lead in to some being in this hell hole called America. The first image is of Abu Bakar Ibn Umar who founded the Almoravid dynasty of Morocco around 1056. The painting was done in the 15th century & it comes from the 1413 chart of Mecia de Viladestes. The 2nd pic is a drawing of King Tenkamenin/Tunkamanin of the Great Empire of Ghana. He was of the Soninke people. Considering that the Soninke to this day assert that they migrated out of Aswan, that name Tenkamenin isn't surprising. Abu Bakar is said to have first sacked Wagadou around 1076 ( some scholars say that there was no conflict, what is known is that by the 1100s Ghana had fully converted to Islam). During the time of the supposed conflict, Tenkamenin ruled Wagadou, he came behind Ghana Bassi. Abu Bakar was killed by an archer in 1087. Mauritanian sources say that a partially blind archer who was a Gangara chieftain shot the arrow. The Wolof say that a man of the Serer people named Amar Godomat killed Abu Bakar. Whatever the case Abu Bakar left a pregnant Fula wife, Fâtimata Sal, who gave birth to a son, the legendary Amadou Boubakar ibn Omar, better known as Ndiadiane Ndiaye, who went on to found the Wolof kingdom of Waalo in the lower Senegal river. Waalo lasted from the 1280s to 1855. Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur of the Almohad dynasty came along around 1184, he was successful in repelling the tide of Christian Reconquista in the Iberian Peninsula. He never lost a battle during his 15 yr reign. He also was a caliph to Morocco & Muslim Spain. When you look at the ethnic groups involved it looks like fights that were a continuation of skirmishes that happened in the Nile Valley centuries before. Soninke/Serer/Wolof of the Nile valley--Almoravids/Almohad of West Asians & Africans.
