I have been using Illustrator to colour in my Al Murphy characters (image 1). I chose my colours carefully for each character to make sure they were bright, interesting and suited each character.

For the lollipop character, I wanted to make him look like one of those swirly rainbow lollipops that are made out of rock. I didn’t know if I could fill shapes in with a rainbow effect in Illustrator, so I looked it up. I found a really helpful webpage that showed me how to get the ‘pride rainbow’ effect on Illustrator (image 2).

To get the the rainbow effect I had to go to my Swatches (image 3) and go to the Swatches library (image 4). I then had to go down to 'Gradients’ and then 'Spectrum’. The Spectrum library only had one effect in it which was the rainbow effect I wanted. There were three settings of the rainbow effect ranging from dark to light, I chose the one on the middle. This gave my lollipop the rainbow effect (image 5) and I found out I could change the 'Aspect Ratio’ of it. Changing the aspect ratio allowed me to change the amount of a particular colour in the lollipop character (image 6).

I still wanted my character to have the rainbow colours, but more swirled. I found a setting that let me change the type of gradient from 'Linear’ to 'Radial’ and this turned the colours into rings instead of stripes. However, this still wasn’t the effect I wanted as I wanted the colours to swirl around the swirl pattern I had created on top of the lollipop character.

I realised then that I couldn’t achieve the effect I wanted, but this rainbow effect I have learned about may come in useful in future outcomes. I have filled my lollipop character in orange instead and have given him orange hands to match. I have colour coordinated each character’s hand in the same way.
