I haven’t been here in a while. I’m sorry. The longer my journey took, the less I wanted to be seen. I should have been less ashamed and more appreciative of the fact that good things take time. In the Deepest Hour

The house has forgotten how to breathe it holds its ribs of wood and wire and listens to the clock gnawing at the dark

Midnight seeps beneath the door a thin black river curling around my ankles every shadow grows a spine and stands a little straighter when I look away

The ceiling stares back at me blank, unblinking a pale and patient sky without its stars

Outside, the wind drags its nails across the windows whispering secrets it never quite repeats the streetlamp flickers a tired halo over an empty road

I sit with the hum of the refrigerator the only other living thing awake and count the spaces between each distant car passing small comets that never stop for me

Loneliness is not loud it is the soft weight of untouched air the echo that returns without a voice attached

And in the deepest hour when even the walls seem unsure of me I realize the night isn’t cruel only vast

It stretches on wide as a forgotten ocean and I am a single boat drifting lantern dim waiting for morning to remember my name
