The greatest revelation for me was hearing Gustav Leonhardt’s transcriptions of these suites for the harpsichord – exactly the same music played by a harmony instrument. My obsession is to try to convey this text as he played it, with his absolutely phenomenal understanding of its harmony and counterpoint. His vision is a great help for the re-transcription I try to make today and has certainly influenced the way I play these suites.
