okay ive kinda delayed asking this for awhile but with your character study videos for grace, tom and paul, i was just wondering how you went about with making those?

i wanna try to make my own one for ruth but im not too sure how to go about with scripting and uh... all that jazz. i havent made one before so im kinda nervy about it all 😖😖😖

so for each of my character studies the process basically goes like this:

1. I watch each installment the character has appeared in (for the Grace video I also watched Tuca & Bertie) and I take notes. I take notes on ANYTHING I think is remotely important. interactions, relationships, specific lines of dialogue or song lyrics that stand out. the basics of themes and arcs and things that reoccur with characters become clear really quick, I typically realize what I want to focus on most during this part because it's the stuff that's most prevalent. quick, loose, on-the-fly observations go here, thoughts that will be expanded on in the full analysis. notes are super helpful, they give me a guide to refer to.

2. I write a first draft of my script. I format my video scripts like chaptered essays - each part is its own chapter. I write them in google docs. I keep my notes open in another tab to refer to, and sometimes if I need to I'll go back to whichever installment I'm writing about and watch a clip. I have to be patient with myself during this part of the process because it is the hardest part. it's the essay, it's basically the whole thing! and writing is HARD. it can take me a long long time to figure out what exactly I want to say, and articulate it in a remotely coherent way. I will write and rewrite and rewrite and rewrite so many times getting the first draft down. what works for me is taking breaks when I'm stuck, and using that first draft to really just dump as many thoughts into the analysis as possible. throw shit at the script and see what sticks, if it sucks you can cut it out later. articulate a thought badly first so you can make it better later on. it is hard for me to remember that, I agonize over it not being perfect right away aaaall the time. but the first draft is the messy one, it's the one to play around with. I use my notes, I trust the process, and a lot of the time with analysis, things will just reveal themselves to me, eventually. it takes time. it's frustrating. but it's very rewarding once it clicks.

3. I read over the script and make second draft edits. the way I normally do this is I just. rewrite the script one paragraph at a time and see where I can expand on certain ideas, rephrase, or cut things down.

4. I send a copy of the script to my wonderful friend who beta reads most of my stuff. she reads it over and gives me feedback!

5. I do a third and final read-over and draft of the script. "final" being a very loose term because last minute edits can come at any time. I have written and recorded brand new chunks of script to add last-minute on many many MANY occasions. a good chunk of the Paul video's conclusion was written and recorded the day before the video was posted. nothing about my process is truly linear and these videos are held together with desperation duct tape and a dream <3

6. I record my audio. my setup is nowhere near professional - I record sitting on my bed with my Insignia USB microphone on a pillow in my lap, reading off my phone. I record the whole script in chunks, one or two paragraphs at a time, depending on how long they are. I label my audio files by part of the script, paragraph, and take. so a file for the Black Friday portion of the Tom video would've been labeled "Tom Priorities P5 Take 3", for example. I try to get at least two solid takes for each recording, and I often end up with closer to five or six. reading is hard. once I have everything recorded I go through and pick the best takes to use in the video. I splice takes together sometimes if there's not a whole good one but parts are good.

6. I edit! my favorite part. I edit my videos in chunks, each part is edited and exported separately before being put together into the final full video. I used to do this out of necessity, because the first few videos I made were edited in a free software called OpenShot and the way that software condensed clips on the editing timeline made it REALLY difficult to edit longer projects, they had to be pieced together. now I use Adobe Premiere Pro and I don't Need to do that anymore but I just like to. it helps me keep everything organized. I usually watch through each part once it's finished to make sure everything looks good, and when I put the final full edit together I'll give the full video a final watch.

then I upload it to YouTube and write the video captions before posting! and that is my process! I hope this is helpful, and if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Richie used to be friends with Jason and Kyle when they were kids, they'd play together sometimes. it fell apart of course, but Jason in particular has always secretly felt bad and missed him. that's why he'll try to covertly get Max to lay off, and it's why he's so eager to include Richie at the homecoming game when Max is gone
