a friend told me today that she just applied to her 80th job

#and has had no success #the academic job market is fuuuuucked.#also this:#‘Non-tenure-track positions...now account for over 70% of all instructional staff appointments in American higher education.’#i was also reading today about how the shift to contingent faculty has eroded faculty governance #which means that most of the people teaching at universities have no formal say in the university's direction or mission or policies #the long-term consequences for higher ed in america #are going to be so so bad #if grad employees and non-TT faculty went on strike #our university literally could not function!#i was talking to another friend in my department about how he asks his students what other courses they're taking in the major #and often they are being taught only by grad students or one-year postdocs who are a year out of our grad program #like 3-4 of their courses in a given semester are taught by contingent instructors #and they don't realize it! like if they have an instructor #they assume that person is a professor
