Oh dang I found some more of my old alters while trying to tidy the apartment! This was a rescue attempt; the thing was beat to heck 😂
I really wish I had the extra spending money to commission an alter of an MTG card.
This would be the alter
If you’re altering M20 cards...
We’ve heard about the change in card stock come M20. Out of the pack they feel thicker and ‘nicer’ to the touch. So I got my hands on a Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and can’t wait to alter it (into Reg from Made in Abyss, in case if you’re wondering), but first I had to test it on some other cards to get used to the new card stock. Here are the results...
Disclaimer: I’m just one person, and as far as I can tell this happens to my cards, and I can’t tell if yours will be the same. I’d like to hear if anyone else gets the same thing, especially from outside my region (Southeast Asia).
For my primer I use Daler-Rowney texture paste, thinned down with a bit of water so it spreads more easily. I usually do 3-4 layers before I paint. After the second pass I noticed that the card is warping pretty badly...
I did wonder if I used too much water (especially since I haven’t done any altering in a month or so). I noticed that it was harder to get the primer to stick to the card too.
And then I turned the card over...
As you can see, there’s obvious water stains on the back of the card. That area feels soggy to the touch. (And yes I know I need to cut my nails)
Just to confirm that I hadn’t added too much water, I set out to perform another experiment...
This time, I primed two layers on two cards from different editions. The art box was my usual primer (Daler-Rowney texture paste) this time without water. I also also ran a clean wet brush over the text box several times.
The M20 card suffered serious warping as compared to the GRN card (none at all).
As for the backs, you can again see the water stains on the M20 card where the text box should be.
I believe this is a new problem, since I’ve been priming my cards like this for at least the past year, even when it goes right to the edge. I’d like to know if anybody else has the same problem. Please try your primers and paints on some random commons before working on anything expensive.
