A few years ago, Rabbi Alysa Stanton lost her position in a congregation in North Carolina following some health complications. In a public Facebook post following this transition Rabbi Stanton, being the first ordained African American rabbi, was ridiculed by racist commenters.
Although not often as public and obvious as this, racism exists in the Jewish community. In this week's Torah portion we are reminded that we were ALL slaves in a strange land and that we always need to stick together.
As we begin Black History Month, I challenge all of us to begin to think about how we can best support our fellow Jews of Color in feeling safe and supported in our Synagogues, camps, Hillels, and other Jewish spaces.
