poe, deeply deprived by his own brilliance. literally selling his soul as a way of defeating his rival — his only trepidation.
the obsession with ranpo shifting from ‘i want to best him intellectually’ to ‘i will distort reality to better cage him. break him.’ then to ‘i will coerce him into selling his soul.’
except the demonic entity poe sold his soul to is slowly consuming him. poe losing himself, driven to insanity as he cannot tell if his feelings towards ranpo are wholly his own anymore.
ranpo slowly realizing what’s happened. the guilt of poe selling his soul because of him. the denial of poes condition against the growing evidence that poe cannot possibly be human anymore.
