Wanna go for a ride- interlude 2
The baby shower.
-
“At least let me plan a baby shower, no one has to know anything besides the fact that you’re having a kid and you’re keeping it.” Isobel sat under the overhang in the junkyard. She could barely see Michael with the glare of the sun on the silver sedan he worked on.
“Oh yeah, Michael responded from under he hood of a car. “No one would be surprised that the white trash foster kid knocked someone up.”
“It’s not like that Michael.”
Michel stopped long enough to glare at her. “This is exactly what people expect from me,” Michael said as he ducked back under the hood. “No good Michael Guerin, of course he knocked up some girl. He’s just continuing the cycle keeping the kid.”
Isobel stood and walked toward Michael. She wrapped her arms around Michael.
“I don’t think that Michael,” she said as they rocked back and forth. “I promise, it will only be people who aren’t assholes.” She pulled back and smiled sunnily at Michael. “Besides I’ll mind-whammy anyone who’s a dick.”
Michael laughed and kissed her on the forehead.
“I love you Iz.”
-
In the end, the shower was Max, Isobel, DeLuca, and the Ortechos. The Valenti’s were there too, but that was unsurprising. There were a few high school classmates who sent presents, probably due to fear of Isobel more than anything.
Michael didn’t really care. He was more surprised that anyone who wasn’t Max and Isobel showed up at all.
“This is from my day,” Liz had said as she gave him a hug. “He said that he hopes you have little girls, because they are the best. He also said that you’ll make amazing dads, and even when I tried to correct his English he said “I know what I said mija, and tell him exactly that.”
He tried not to think about how Arturo could possibly know. But, then again, he was the man who constantly made jokes about carrying Liz for 18 months. He was more willing to suspend his belief than anyone else in the town. He was also more than willing to humor any jokes about aliens. Liz took one of the cupcakes home to him. She said he’d find them funny.
The cupcakes had little alien babies on them. Isobel has made a few decorations too, mostly little alien heads in little cowboy hats.
“You’re baby is going to be out of this world,” Rosa had laughed as she looked at the decorations. Michael has laughed and wished desperately that Alex could actually be there for his own shower, for their baby and their family.
“I’m sorry Alex couldn’t be here,” Maria said as she handed her gift, one from her and one from Mimi. “He’s just battling some kind of health problem, been doing it since October.”
Michael has smiled, said he understood, and moved on to the gift that Sanders and his wife had dropped off the night before.
He tried not to think about it, about how Alex had to hide, how they couldn’t admit it was their kid, their family. He didn’t want to think about how the town thought he had a one night stand with some girl out of town and then decided to actually step up and claim the kid, when they were committed and dedicated to their future child and actually had a plan about how they would live and provide and stay together instead of being what everyone expected of the kid who jumped from foster home to foster home, who was smart but would never beat the system.
They’d beat the system. And they’d do it together. Michael was determined to be better than what every one expected of him. He was determined to be the beat dad he could possibly be. He never had a father to look up to, but he an dAlex both knew what they never wanted to be.

As always, this is all @bisexualalienblast’s fault.
a very happy birthday to @queen-reekoo
Hello Hornblower fandom
He had to write out his report to Pellew three times, the original draught, the fair copy, and the copy in his confidential letter book. Some captains gave that work to their clerks, but Hornblower would not do so. Captain's clerks made a practice of exploiting their confidential position; there were officers in the ship who would be glad to hear what their captain said about them, and what the future plans might be. Martin would never have the chance. He could confine himself to muster rolls and returns of stores and the other nuisances that plagued a captain's life.
This is what I think of every time my boss asks me to type up the department meeting agenda
Now that I finally have a magnetic compass again, who wants to (re)learn orienteering
We’re going to do triangulation
I was explaining to a coworker that usually I can use the position of the sun to get myself oriented correctly but that doesn’t work at night
And then months ago I was telling Amander how I literally had to get the compass app on my phone out to get myself turned in the right direction to get to the streetcar platform while it was raining
So naturally actually getting a magnetic compass for these situations was the next logical step
> hey Amanda I’m going to show the WWI soldier a vape, it doesn’t even need matches to use it. Also we’ve come up with a technical term for shell-shock
> do not do that
Hello Hornblower mutuals I feel like you’d especially enjoy the phrasing:
I can do a cleat hitch I can’t do a relationship
