Amanda Marshall

I stumbled across the 2023 album Heavy Lifting by Canadian songstress Amanda Marshall today. I loved her work in the 90s and often wondered where she had disappeared to. It turns out she was fighting with her record company and seemingly frozen out of recording for many years.

I've only had one listen to the album but I love it so far. Her voice still has that distinctive husky rasp and she can still level up to Janis-like amplitude if needed. The songs speak of unrequited love, heartbreak, perfidy, and betrayal. I guess she's earned it. It seems she has assembled a crackerjack backing band. (God bless the drummer who has discovered the innate beauty of the floor tom!).

Nothing so far has grabbed me by the throat like "Let It Rain", "Birmingham", "Sitting On Top of the World", or "Dark Horse", but early days yet.

I'm glad your voice is being heard again Amanda. We missed you.
