concert review: bad suns
After completely transforming their persona from a dark, mysterious, rock and roll bad boy group to a more artsy and relatable pop-infused image, Bad Suns exceeded all expectations previously set during their show at Le Poisson Rouge on November 1st. It was my fourth time seeing them so I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't expect that. From the sheer talent of the lot of musicians on stage to the radiating stage presence set forth by lead singer Christo Bowman, the show was phenomenal to say the least. I love watching a band grow artistically and musically, and Bad Suns had such a successful transition from their first to their sophomore album. Despite the daunting knowledge that I was going to be taking the hardest midterm of the semester the very next day, I arrived to the venue early in the morning trying to find myself a ticket to the show. While in line I met Gabriella and Jae, two huge fans of Coin, the opening act for the night. Jae had traveled from Korea to NYC in order to see the show. She had never visited America before, and it was so inspiring that music is what got her here. Watching her experience her favorite band live for the first time was a magical experience- everyone in the crowd and in the band was really touched by her journey. If you’ve never heard of Coin, they are an indie pop group based out of Nashville. For being a supporting act for the night, they garnered impressive support from the audience, which was no surprise considering how energetic the performance was. Bad Suns opened with the title track, Disappear Here, and the crowd immediately proved it was going to bring the energy New York is known for. The band performed a great array of new and old songs, and was sure to thank the people who stuck around from their debut album. My favorites from the setlist were Swimming in the Moonlight and Dancing on Quicksand, both of which had the crowd moving from start to finish. During Rearview, Christo parted the crowd in order to jump in, immersing himself in the sea of people. It was an intimate moment that was so incredible to watch.

music: perks of being a music fest volunteer
As festival season comes to a close, I thought it would be beneficial to those who love live music to read about the perks of volunteering at a music festival. This year I was able to attend and volunteer at Bonnaroo, Firefly, and the Meadows Music and Arts music festival. Although each fest presented a unique experience, I believe that volunteering was one of the main reasons I had such an incredible time at all three!
1. FREE FEST! Most, if not all, festivals offer a free ticket to volunteers. When you apply you put a down payment of the price of the festival, and once it ends (and if you actually show up and work your shift), you will be reimbursed! This is one of the biggest perks to volunteering, especially if you have a music heavy heart but a low budget.
2. FREE FOOD/ENTERTAINMENT Food at music festivals are always ridiculously priced, so when a food token is in question, the answer is volunteering! This perk depends on the festival, and on the shift you choose. If you work a catering position, there is a high possibility your supervisor will allow you to indulge in the food you'll either be serving/cooking!
3. MAKE CONNECTIONS If you’re someone aspiring to work in the music industry, this is a great way to make connections with professionals! Take the press shift, even if you're just cleaning the press tent or handing out credentials, you might have an opportunity to introduce yourself! The hospitality shift is also a great option! You may end up working in the VIP section of the festivals, or, if you’re lucky, you'll work artist hospitality! You can already imagine the people who will around!
4. MEET NEW PEOPLE Volunteering is a great way to meet other festival goers and volunteers! I met a plethora of interesting individuals who had similar interests and music tastes as me.
5. COMMUNITY Volunteering gives you the opportunity to possibly enhance the experience for other festival goers! It’s always a great to know you contributed to the positive feelings people have toward festivals!
6. YOUR OWN CAMPGROUND For festivals that involve camping, volunteers usually get their own campgrounds! They are usually less crowded and you get to be around people who will share similar experiences as you. And sometimes the campground is located right next to a festival entrance, which is heavenly.
7. FIRST LOOK AT FEST Volunteers usually arrive first to the festival, which is a great way to explore and get acquainted with the camp ground/festival ground before the crowd arrives.
If you have any questions or concerns about being a festival volunteer, tweet me @maandrz!

single review: fuck with myself by banks
The emergence of the promotion of self acceptance and personal strength for women by female musicians has become one of my favorite aspects of our generation’s music industry. Although we are still faced with the depletion of character by males in many genres, there seems to be a theme of women empowerment that screams “no more”. Banks, a Californian native, recently put out her latest single “Fuck With Myself”, which tells the story of a woman who leaves her man after realizing that she is worth so much more than the way he treated her. The song is mysterious and sexy and I love it so much. The beat is mellow but the synths tell a story of their own. They’re almost reminiscent of footsteps. I can picture her quite literally walking away from the relationship to the sound of the rhythm. The most compelling part is when she softly whispers the line “so I fuck with myself more than anybody else”. There is smooth yet powerful confidence in her voice. She speaks on how he use to burn her with his words, and how she would hang onto everything he said. She no longer does, and as a woman I thoroughly appreciate her attitude and her conviction. The message is clear and important. The background vocals repeatedly sing “its all love”, and by a means of interpretation I take this line to express the idea that, despite her obvious mistreatment, she will walk away feeling nothing but love for the person, the situation, and mostly for herself. She loves herself too much to stay, but there are no hard feelings.
Her sophomore album is said to be released sometime this year, and considering the brilliance of “Fuck With Myself”, there is only excitement for what’s to come.

8 years ago, the hilarious Amanda McCall and I wrote a book for Harper Collins called Grandma’s Dead: Breaking Bad News with Baby Animals. It somehow sold 150,000 copies and spawned two other books, a calendar and a t-shirt. I realize that I haven’t talked about these books in a really long time and the holidays are just...six months away...so it’s time to get back into the spirit.
The whole idea behind the first book is that Amanda and I finally found a way to deliver bad news without the annoying pain and guilt afterwards. Through decades of tests, we’ve learned that if you soften the blow with a photo of a baby animal, you can get through just about anything with no problems. So, we developed a book of ADORABLE postcards to rip out and send to help deliver the bad news for you with ZERO REPERCUSSIONS. Then we wrote two more books because sequels are huge right now and Harper Collins wanted them.
ENJOY!!!
