Yeah, my first two responses are really a) Steve, you are the PRODUCT of artificial enhancements, and yeah, you have worked since then to capitalize off of it, but that’s your ORIGIN STORY and b) you are literally talking to a guy who is only alive and moving because of massive medical and technological intervention. Acting like it’s some kind of shameful cheat is ... remarkably tactless.

I see you have loads of suggestions already, but I can tell you that I recently read The Tell-Tale Heart to a 14-year-old (whom I'd basically just met) and he loved it.

There used to be no language requirements at all at most Am. schools, so it's improving. One of the weird things I've noticed is that a lot of elementary and middle schools are starting to teach a language (generally Spanish), which is great... except that they do it in such a way that the kids aren't actually progressing to more advanced ability. Most places, if you started taking Spanish in 1st grade or in 8th grade, you'll still be placed in Spanish 2 for 9th grade.
that’s insane!! but hopefully they’ll start giving language teaching the place it deserves in the curriculum (especially in a country with a high Hispanic/Latino population, among others...) I’m obviously biased, but learning a language (any language!) is paramount imo, it just broadens your mind and gives you an insight into other cultures and societies.

It's awesome that there's such an emphasis! Most Americans take about two years of a language as one of their regular classes in high school, which isn't nearly enough to establish even basic fluency. Then some people will take a couple extra years in HS, or a year in college, which may at least get them to a level where they're pretty functional. After that, most of us promptly stop learning our language, don't use it, and forget everything we once knew.

Here, English is part of the national curriculum since 4th grade onwards (that is, from primary school all through high-school...) There is, unfortunately, a huge difference in the quality of teaching in public and private schools. Private schools usually offer more hours of English class, or even an after-class English club. And those who can afford it send their kids to bilingual schools. On top of that, most of the lower-middle-class/middle-class/upper-middle-class families send their kids to language schools like the one I work at. Learning English is a huge deal here.

A) I totally love this, and it’s absolutely accurate. B) It really makes me sympathize (even more) with Steve. Like, it’s so obvious that he *needed* to tell Tony. I’m going to have to go up to him in his house and look him in the eye and tell him that my best friend murdered his parents and that I’ve known about it for a week/a month/a year/two years oh god”
and like maybe by month 6 of Knowing About This Secret he actually manages to convince himself--seeing how much grief tony still has over his parents’ death, seeing how stressed he is already, knowing how much they’re all dealing with--that he’s actually genuinely Protecting tony from this For His Own Good. like, tony went from having a panic attack at the MENTION of new york in IM3 to having apparently brought it up enough to be Annoying in AOU, which was terrible, but also, this means that tony stark has 125% for sure had a panic attack in front of his team while steve Knew About This Secret and mr “looks out for the little guy” “uses a shield as his weapon of choice” “lies down on a grenade to protect other people” was like “okay well i can literally never add on more shit for this guy to deal with ever oh my god”
steve rogers is an idiot and if you look at cacw through the lens of “i’ve known a terrible really bad super awful secret concerning my friend for several years and it’s going to destroy him emotionally and haven’t told him and now everything in the universe is fucking coming together to tell tony this secret and every time i’m around him all i’m thinking about is that he’ll be dealing with this situation with bucky and he doesn’t know that bucky killed his parents. I can’t ask him for help because he’s going to help and then find out that bucky killed his parents. I have to distance myself and plan for the worst because tony thinks this will be fine right now and that he can fix things but how are things going to be when he finds out that bucky killed his parents. To some extent. My parents were of opposite parties (Mom was an old-fashioned New England Republican, and Dad was an old-fashioned southern Democrat.) When I turned 18, I didn’t identify strongly with either party. I initially registered as a Republican because Mom was one, and I considered her more reasonable on most issues than Dad had been. (He died when I was seventeen, so he wasn’t around to argue about it.) I re-registered as an independent within a year or two, and then in 1988, I re-registered again as a Democrat. But I never really paid much attention to politics until the 1990s. The 2000 election was when I really started to get involved. The more attention I paid, the more liberal I got, though honestly, I think that’s as much a function of American politics drifting right over the past forty years as me drifting left.
