The officers would not have to bring the canines and the tear gas out had the protests been peaceful. The protestors literally looted and burned a QuikTrip gas station. A shopping mall MILES AWAY had to be put under lockdown from fights and riots. This isn't a peaceful protest, THATS why the police have canines out.

The police brought out the big guns and the dogs a full day BEFORE any of the protests turned violent. They could have brought out local government officials to talk to the community, to assure them that justice would be done. They could have treated Michael Brown’s body, his family, and his community with respect and dignity. Instead they left Michael Brown’s body laying in the street uncovered for hours and brought out the riot gear and dogs to snarl at the (then peaceful) crowds.
