Gorgeous Toborochi trees 🌴🌴
A common name for the toborochi in Spanish is arbol botella (bottle tree), which is fitting, too. And, the trees are sometimes called palo borracho (drunken stick) because as they age they begin to look disheveled and the upper trunk becomes distorted.
Young trees have multitudes of thorny spines along the trunk which help protect the juicy juvenile from predators in the wild
The tree is sometimes referred to as the ‘Silk Floss Tree’ - The name "silk floss" derives from the seed pods which have fluffy, cottony material rather like milkweeds do; it has been used as stuffing, and to make paper and other things. In WWII, it was used to stuff Navy life jackets.
"The hand is also a tree
Growing inwards."
Luang Namtha Jungle, Laos A myriad of noises, technicoloured caterpillars and butterflies, centipedes longer than my forearm, endlessly humming crickets, leeches and gigantic spiders. Fungi and moss grow upon trees growing upon trees. Banana leaves make a canopy, bamboo like gigantic blades of grass. Streams turn into water falls turn in to rivers. Overwhelming green, freshly made oxygen straight in to my lungs. Laos is filled with butterflies, little spirits on the landscape. Some of the most beautiful I'm yet to see- and still yet to manage to photograph. Laos people believe in animism and before eating they take a small piece of every part of a meal and offer it to the spirits so they may eat with us. Food eat with hands on banana leaves as plates. Tiny little houses made for spirits outside every home.
