Jeff Bezos - Caricatured him the day before…Hachette-Amazon Controversy.
e-Textbooks / Ηλεκτρονικά εγχειρίδια
With all the fuss over e-books between Amazon and Hachette, I won't touch the person preference of an e-book over the "real deal" book. believe. That is between a person and the book-God they believe in. I'd like to have a take on the e-textbooks.
I'm sure it is much more common in universities, and maybe even in schools in some countries. But here in Greece, the idea of working through e-books either in public schools or in private institutions is still just that. An idea.
Personally, I find that using e-readers and e-textbooks could make our lives as teachers much much much easier. Less things to carry, everything at the disposal of a touch screen, is really enticing.
But, as usual, the question that arises is, should we promote a culture of e-readers istead of acquainting students with a print book? Given that we teach young learners, we not only stay at a curriculum but we also teach culture, a way of thinking, a way of learning.
Would be just engage in digital literacy or would it be something more?
Ωστόσο στον αντίποδα, είναι άραγε δόκιμο, σε μια γενιά που πλέον είναι εξαιρετικά ηλεκτρονική, να προβάλλουμε το βιβλίο ως κάτι ακόμα ψηφιακό; Θα κάνει τους μαθητές και μαθήτριες να το δουν με "καλύτερο μάτι" ή θα τους απομακρύνουμε ακόμα περισσότερο από το έντυπο;
Στα πλαίσια μιας σύγχρονης διδακτικής πρακτικής και ενίσχυσης των ψηφιακών γραμματισμών, μήπως η συμβολή θα είναι περισσότερο επιβλαβής παρά εποικοδομητική;

Saturday Morning Email Party
You know how sometimes you’re dating someone & you think they’re cool & then they send you a looong cray-mail? #whoa #Amazon #amazonhachette

On this Saturday, Amazon called on thousands of KDP authors to spam the CEO of Hachette. That’s their killer new negotiating tactic. To be clear, I think KDP is a great service. But… what? Chuck Wendig said it best when he called this situation “cookoo banana-pants” (upgraded to “ludicrous coyote-pants” for accuracy).

Dave Hill Address Amazon-Hachette Controversy with Malcolm Gladwell and Dick Cavett
Amazon has been having a dispute with high profile authors from or close to the publishers at Hachette in that Amazon seems to be intentionally slowing the sales of certain book by not taking pre-orders or saying that the book in unavailable when it's not.
Leave it to comedian/musician/writer/raconteur Dave Hill and a set of toys to explain away the controversy even when he's confronted by celebrated author Malcolm Gladwell and the legendary Dick Cavett. Watch how Hill handles the situation here.
Last night, we raised the question: Amazon: Business As Usual? Our thoughtful speakers gave their two cents, and today Flavorwire breaks down the event and highlights the questions of cultural urgency that came up.
Pack at least one of these before you head out on vacation.
If any of these books sounds interesting to you, don't buy them through Amazon.
