I was a very happy Amazon tonight.
Officially 28 years in this body today and I've never felt more at home. Feeling strong, calm, and powerful this morning and ready to tackle this birthday and whatever comes next head on!

Deadlifts For Amazon Size and Strength
The deadlift is arguably the best display of true strength and power in barbell training. There is no means of “cheating” the deadlift, you cannot miss depth and there are no spotters waiting to help you push through lock-out. You can either pick the weight up off of the ground, or you cannot. There are very few things more satisfying than pulling a heavy weight from a dead stop off of the ground.

Today I’m taking some time for self-care. Had a nice long delt/bicep session and ordered food in. Now I’m just going to focus on eating (I have some serious calories to make up today) and playing Skyrim. I’m feeling large, but always struggling with feeling like it’s not quite enough. I guess that’s what keeps me hungry ;)
I'm a lesbian looking to improve my health through physical fitness but I find a lot of gym culture offensive. Fitness classes seem to be really gendered and all about getting in shape for a man. Most gyms I've been to try to put women in Zumba or pole dancing and the weight room is basically a man cave. How do you get past this as a newbie in the fitness world?
Honestly, I think one of the best ways to get through your early days in this sort of gym environment is to more-or-less put the blinders on. There are undoubtedly helpful, friendly people at your gym and as you gain more confidence you might be able to figure out who looks like a good person to ask for a spot, but there’s no reason to rush this.
It can help to go in completely prepared: have your program/plan written down and make sure that you’ve watched videos for form on whatever lifts you have planned for that day and that you’ve tried the movements without weight at home. Do your research. It’s good to write a short description or draw a quick sketch of a movement if it’s something you’re unfamiliar with. If you have a plan set you can get in the gym, put your head down, and focus through your workout which should help with the social anxiety that can come from new situations such as this. Depending on how busy your gym is, you might want to find out when it’s quietest and see if going at that time will work with your schedule at least while you’re getting the hang of things. If you’re the type for motivational photos, switch your lock screen to a photo of a badass, tough woman that you look up to so you have a reminder of what you’re working towards at your fingertips whenever you feel out of place.
If you can find even one friend to come along with you, any situation at the gym either in the weight room or at a class will be infinitely easier.
Good luck, you’re making a great decision for yourself and your body by getting into physical fitness. Feel free to drop by with more questions any time!
It makes me feel good to look in the mirror every day and know that I made this. I think that's important. I placed so many false assumptions on my body prior to transition. I certainly did not think it would be possible to get well-muscled and strong in the blocky, boxed off way that I desired without testosterone, and yet here I am. I've busted ass for a few years and now I'm sitting at the most solid 140lbs I've ever been. The work that I've put in to get here day in and day out has taught me humility and respect for my body in previously unimaginable ways. I truly believe that powerlifting saved my life. Now I can fully appreciate my body for the functional vessel that it is, with so many capabilities, rather than continuing to chase some ever-moving nebulous aesthetic target. I'm getting stronger every single day. Self-made.
Deciphering Set And Rep Schemes
There are two main schools of thought regarding set and rep schemes. The powerlifting and Olympic lifting strategy is to lift heavy weights for low repetitions. In contrast, most bodybuilders train using moderate weights for high reps and keep their number of sets on any given lift relatively low. Both of these strategies are effective for gaining strength and size, but the emphasis is different.
