I already got mad on Twitter but I'm going to put it here - news broken by ITV shows THOUSANDS of products being destroyed by amazon warehouses. I'm gonna be putting links at the bottom but 124,000 items destroyed A WEEK - In ONE centre Items ranging from high end electricals - Ipads, macbooks - to household appliances - Hoovers, fans, dysons - to SEALED UNUSED FACE MASKS being sent to landfills and recycle sites. Things that could have been donated to charities, workplaces, schools/school children, low income families, homeless shelters, libraries, and probably a whole host of other places. Think how much good an iPad or laptop would do a student studying at home - a low income family with one shared computer and children who need to do online classes. Adults who's PCs can't handle the work they need to do. Think of how much money could have been raised for charity selling some of these products in their stores. Especially jewellery and books. Think of how many things would have been of use in homeless shelters, or could be given to homeless and low income families to make their lives a little easier. Hairdryers, cutlery sets - Probably clothes and towels and toiletries too. Think how many libraries and schools would benefit from those books.
Think how many workplaces could have benefited from those masks. From fans to improve airflow. Hell imagine how many amazon employees have to watch things they could never afford on their wages be carted off to be destroyed knowing that if they tried to take one it's 'theft'. You could let employees take things from the pile. Sure they might resell for profit but what do you care you were destroying it? And even if that would be a problem there's easy enough work arounds. 'One electronic item a week/month' 'One Laptop/Tablet per 6 months' whatever. And if you're gonna be really shallow and corporate... Raffles. Increase brand awareness and public opinion by raffling off the higher end goods. You don't need to pay disposal fees, you look good, and someone gets something. Wins all around. Charity auctions of higher end goods - Auction off higher end goods with idk, 70% of proceeds going to charity. You're still making money. It's short sighted, wasteful, and cruel. It's unsustainable and fuelled by pure spite and greed. The idea that it's better to lose money destroying something than to let someone else have it. I'm furious. [ITV Link 1 - Multiple videos with evidence and explanation] [ITV Link 2 - Just evidence video] It was an ITV investigation so they're the best links but it's also been picked up by other news sites. There isn't really any new information but it helps to show that the ITV source is reputable. [The Scottish Sun] [The Metro] [The Verge] [The Telegraph] [The Scotsman] [The Gazette]
