*scratching at your doggy door* amberchen? scratches some more

Kissing Rachel Amber was like trying to hold onto a comet. It was like trying to capture a wildfire in a bottle and keep it together while the sheer force of nature of it all was endlessly pouring out. Alex could feel Rachel’s passion scorching the floorboards and curling the wallpaper as their lips crashed together. It was all enveloping and all consuming and she loved every second of it as the two of them collapsed onto Alex’s bed with Rachel on top of her. After what felt like both an eternity and the most unfairly short time together Rachel pulled back and Alex finally got a fresh lungful of air. “Holy shit…” Rachel chuckled, her face a smirk and her eyes the most beautiful hazel jewels, “never get tired of hearing that.”

Alex reached up and cupped Rachel’s cheek, in awe of the shimmering golden light haloing her girlfriend like angelic flames. “How did I get so lucky to ever meet you.”

Rachel’s smile turned softer, more private, something Alex got to count herself among the lucky few to ever see. She gently held Alex’s hand in both of hers, turning slightly to close her eyes and press soft kisses into Alex’s palm. The golden flames Alex could see coming off of Rachel flickered with the softest pinks. “That’s supposed to be my line,” she said before turning her gaze back on Alex. she leaned back down, brushing a lock of hair out of Alex’s face. “I used to think being with Chloe and Max was the best thing life could ever hand me.” She pressed her lips softly to Alex’s. “But then we met you in Portland… And I never knew the world had so much color.” She smiled at Alex again before kissing her more fiercely. The small moment of vulnerability gone, the flames of Rachel’s love for Alex burning hot again.

Of Jade and Dragons by Amber Chen

★★★★ 3.5 stars If I were a teenager reading this book, I would have rated it higher. As an adult, however, it becomes more difficult to rate

3.5 star. Of Jade and Dragons is fun, but the writing felt closer to middle-grade making it difficult to rate. Ying is a good MC but lacked some maturity for an 18-year-old. I hope there will be more worldbuilding and writing growth from Chen in book two.
