The Hornet was the final stepping stone in AMC’s transition away from “Rambler,” replacing the circa-1964 Rambler American (by then called the “AMC Rambler”) for 1970. But it also reached back to a famous name from the past - the Hudson Hornet. “Rambler” had once been the pre-eminent name in American small cars - but in the 60s the big 3 “compacts” had cut into that business, and the growth of VW and other imports had not abated. AMC had to do new things. - AMC’s project IV, a set of four concept cars which appeared in the spring of 1966, previewed the way forward. One was the Vignale AMX, previewing the production AMX; but two of the others, the Cavalier sedan and Vixen coupe, showed AMC stylist Dick Teague’s vision for a new “compact.” It arrived as the #AMCHornet in mid-1969. #AMC spent $40M on it, and it was a mostly new car save for engines and a few chassis components held over from the American. - Like Ford’s Maverick, it was not so different from what went before, but it looked new and the styling made it look like a mid-size (it was slightly smaller than the American) - a plus in 1970. It was meant as an economical family car, and was at first offered with a pair of sixes and a lone 304 V8, in two- or four-door sedan form. These were joined in 1971 by a proper muscle car - the one-year-only Hornet SC360, named for its 360-cid V8. - But the best Hornet was another ’71 - the #Sportabout. Muscle car cues made all the Hornets handsome, but the Sportabout’s sharply raked hatch made it what we’d now call a “sportwagon” even when it wore dog dishes and had a 100-hp 232cid six under the hood. Many special editions were made of this Wagon including an “SC360-lite” X package and branding tie-ups with Gucci and Levi’s. But even the regular wagons were nice to drive and look at. No other compact wagon was offered by the Big 3 at the time, so the car had a niche of its own. - The Sportabout quickly proved the most popular Hornet - the best seller of the line by far throughout its run into 1977 (this is a ’74). The Hornet was then restyled into the 1978 Concord, AMC was short on cash again, and then modified into the 1980-88 Eagle, with the Wagon again dominating. https://www.instagram.com/p/BsbFGKbl2cX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=8hbgd92ohv3l
