Ame-Comi Supergirl #3 continues with a mind-controlled Supergirl taking on the superheroes who came to oppose Brainiac’s invasion.
Supergirl does her best Brie Larson impression, practically asking whether Robin’s batarangs are a “personal attack or something.” Kara easily flicks Robin away and she doesn’t show any concern for the hero, mind-controlled or not.
It’s Steel’s time to shine and while she does a better job than Robin, she’s no match of Supergirl either. I didn’t expect her to compare to kryptonian when it comes to power levels, but Steel comes off really likeable and cool. Taking on Supergirl and not being afraid, she’s badass!
When Supergirl freezes Steel with the intent to kill her... that really doesn’t paint Kara in a good light. This is the last issue of her series and she’s the most unlikeable character. Yes, she’s made a villain against her will, but you expect the protagonist to shine.
As herself.
Ame-Comi Supergirl isn’t canon, but it does very little to make Kara an engaging character. Same goes for Catwoman. She’s tagging along for the ride, not caring about the heroes or villains around her. Sure, Catwoman is a jewel thief who looks out for herself, but if she’s going to be a part of the story she needs something to do. Why include her in the story if she isn’t allowed to switch sides to save herself? There’s no story or character arcs here for Catwoman and barely any for Kara.
And we’re already at the end of the series. Albeit it continues in Ame-Comi Girls. The issue ends with Wonder Woman coming forth to save the undeserving Catwoman.
I was never a fan of the bitchy Ame-Comi version of Wonder Woman. She was a farcry from the caring and loving Diana of the canon who still knew how to fight when the situation called for it. That said - because I’m not a fan of Supergirl and the fact she’s an outright villain in this story - I love how Diana calls Kara a bitch!
On their own, none of these series stand on their own feet. Supergirl’s series ends with her being the villain. The story continues in Ame-Comi Girls where the headstrong Wonder Woman rightfully upstages Kara.
I’ll be looking into that series - how it handles both Power Girl and Supergirl specifically - soon!
