4 summers ago I met my Togolese grandmother for the first time. she came to America for the very first time just to see me. back in Togo she raised a family of all men. didn't have any daughters or grand daughters other than me. when my father came to the states and eventually had me she began collecting gifts that she would give to me the day she met me. she doesn't speak a bit of English and I know zero French. when we met she didn't speak. she just cradled me in her arms like a child thanking God that she made it. the outfit that I am wearing is one of the gifts she brought to me. at the time I cared nothing for it. I think I even lost it and found it again a year or 2 ago. I educated myself on the importance of these African kente cloths and discovered that kente means "that which will not tear away under any conditions". there's so much truth in that as it applies to my life. I've been through so much and I have not one tear. soon I will go and meet her again, explore our village in Togo, walk with her along the Ivory Coast and thank her for her gifts.
