Why do american pool balls have numbers on?

I’ve been googling and looking at rules and all sorts of everything and no actual answers???? My best guess is you have to declare which ball you’re going to hit or pot but they’re all different anyway. Is it tradition from something? I could respect that. Still, if you just make all the spots yellow and all the stripes red and tale the numbers off it seems a hellovalot simpler…
