We hold fast to our fasteners, actually, we remove them when we can. Processing older records puts archivists in contact with some really unique ways people used to “hold it together.”
We just completed the restoration and preservation of models by George Hawley thanks to a grant from the Champlin Foundation that allowed us to purchase custom model cases. Hawley was an artist, teacher and lover of interesting architecture. He grew up in upstate New York and resided during his adult life in his family’s farmhouse. He had a knack for creating scale size models of all the theaters he attended as a young man. Later, he dismantled these custom built architectural buildings, and re-used the materials to construct the ships now in SSHSA’s collection. #AmericanArchivesMonth https://www.instagram.com/p/B3xfTWOghLX/?igshid=n9skcex42b0g

October is American Archives Month
In the spirit of Archives Month, we want to share our unit’s best “Still Pictures.” These gelatin silver prints come to our holdings courtesy of the Los Angeles Police Department following an explosion, fire, and the arrest of whiskey bootlegger Fannie Rossen on Sunset Boulevard.
If you are a fan of photography, like we are, check out The Unwritten Record, a blog of the National Archives Special Media Division. Who knows, they may have some excellent “still pictures” to share as well.
