Are lyrics getting worse?
Have you ever been listening to the radio, thinking "oh my god - what happened to all the good music with it's meaningful lyrics? Then this text here is for you , because some time ago, I was lucky enough to get some insights into a study that is dealing with exactly this topic.
The study has or better is still beeing done by a guy called Peter Christenson. What he did, is comparing the lyrics of all songs that have been in the US Top 40 between 1960 and 2010, to figure out some trends regarding the content of those lyrics. And he found some quite interesting facts:
1. Political lyrics were never really popular
Lyrics that had a clear and distinctive political message, have surprisingly not been more popular in the times of Bob Dylan and similar singer-songwriters, than they are now.
2. Lyrics are becoming more explicit
Just think about the following: In 1967 the Rolling Stones performed at the Ed Sullivan Show and to do so, they had to change the lyrics of one of there songs from "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spend some time together". Crazy right? I mean seriously, the explicitness of lyrics has clearly reached a whole new level these days compared to those times.
3. Fuck - we are really in a capitalistic society
What I mean by this is, that the mentioning of money or other status symbols has doubled over the last decade. Seeing lyrcis as a mirror of society, I am not sure if I approve that.
4. Less romance :'(
There are obviously still enough romantic love songs out there. But nonetheless, referring back to song lyrics explicitness, nowadays the topic of sex increasingly replaces the purely romantic love song.
5. Party
There have never been more lyrics about partying. Of course you could say that we just reached a point, where we care less about what some might call the "important topics" but hey, at least we are having fun right?
