It is based on the 1507 map by Martin Waldseemüller, a German clergyman and cartographer, which first referred to the southern hemisphere where Amerigo Vespucci landed in 1501 as America. Waldseemüller and his collaborator Matthias Ringmann gave their Introduction to Cosmography an accompanying world map...

March 9 is the birthday of Italian-born merchant, explorer, and navigator, Amerigo Vespucci. He’s the guy who America was named after, and unlike a certain other Italian guy who erroneously gets credit did its did discovery, Vespucci actually stepped foot on there and didn’t confuse it for another country. He also didn’t contribute to a ton of slavery and mass slaughter of indigenous people. Bonus! So why don’t we just forget the other guy, and go with Amerigo Vespucci Day? ^__^
