Hii! This is going to be really out of nowhere, but I feel like I have a category 7 fixation event incoming with warframe, and one of the characters, Lettie, kinda reminds me of the way I imagine Amity in my head. Just wanted to share :3

Somewhat related, though, even though Amity exists in a state of LIMBO in my drafts because I suck at art. I can share a lot of the artistic influences behind Amity's character!!

Okay, so!!!! Regarding the fundamentals of her design, it all started with this one picture I was recommended on my Pinterest of the model Choi So-ra*!

(*I believe this is her, but Pinterest sucks with credit, and I rely on Google image searches for clarification, I also know this model is South Korean-- back in the initial foundation stages, I didn't have anything about Amity's race yet set, I was just looking for fashion vibe inspirations to get a feel for the attitude I was going for)

This was the start, and everything else about Amity followed! But this picture was just the initial inspiration-- I wanted a tall, shortcut hair leaning a touch masc, but overall very femme but in an imposing runway sort of way-- fashion queen, refined, but no brand names.

The type of a woman who only wears fur coats directly crafted by artisans and thinks herself ahead of labels like Gucci. Insufferable but in an entirely different kind of way - which has humour at the front of it, but there's a lot of depth behind it.

I only had the basic outline of her character and her backstory at that point-- like her being Japanese, an early feminist, anti-imperialist and champion for women's and worker rights during the period of rampant Japanese Imperialism following the Russo-Japanese war and into WW2 who was subjected to a politically driven femicide and cut down in her prime. A tragedy turned worse when it turned out her body had been parasitized by a monster (The Jorōgumo) that was using her as a cocoon to incubate, and with her death, it set it loose and rebirthed her wrong.

The little details, like the timeline, weren't cemented, and I was looking for something to ground her aesthetic and build around. She had the foundation of the bug lady, but she was missing depth, and then I found this art pieces by Takabatake Kashō (1888-1966, left) & Takato Yamamoto (1960- present day, right)

And this was where Amity got cemented into the vibes of a woman anachronism out of time -- she was never going to be directly from the 20s, but more so clinging to aspects of a time long gone out of comfort and personal association between them and the periods of joy they represented for her.

After this, all the natural writing development came along - including the very late edition of the ship with Walter (yes, that was one of the last details added to her characters ASDASDAS)

But I was also deeply deeply inspired by the vibes of the sort of femme fatales depicted by Ichiro Tsuruta (1954-present) and they also completely influenced the way Amity's design has been shaping up!

There were some days where Amity really fucking hated her job. Some days was really most days, Shepard really wasn’t proving himself to be some valiant, selfless hero and... If she was going to be honest, which out of respect she rarely was, what she hated most was he atmosphere of the Normandy. The way Commander Shepard was placed on a pedestal. That everything would be fine with him in charge, what could possibly go wrong? What could possibly go wrong? Petty Officer Esmond knew the answer intimately. 

The shadow of the Paragon never left her. And as she went about her busywork she always found her eyes wondering to the support systems, to mission control, dreading some kind of terrible news that would lead everyone on the Normandy to... 

The closest they've gotten so far is a soldier hit, badly but not fatally. He wasn't a marine, she overheard her cohorts talking about him being a mercenary chosen by Commander Shepard personally. An assassin, but none of them have really bothered to ask his name. She can relate. But it seemed it was her job to clean the blood from the medical ward. Fine, messy, but fine, she's had worse. Much... Much worse. She stumbled when she found the Drell still in there, awake but resting. Why did she think he wouldn’t still be in the infirmary? You idiot, you fucking moron.

"Uhh, hi. Sorry. Uh..." She wasn't sure how to address him, he didn't exactly fit in the naval hierarchy. Shit, shit, shit... "I'm just here to clean, y'know... Your blood." It was a weird, awkward situation, but she had no choice but to be there.

Meet my latest D&D character, a genderfluid tiefling monk-barian named Amity whose excessively long and ridiculous backstory nearly broke our DM.
