Steve hasn’t been back to his family’s cottage for years, ever since the car accident took both his parents and his childhood memories. His therapist seems to think it’s a good idea for him to get out of the city for a while, so Steve decides it's time to fix it up. He remembers a lot of things when he’s finally arrives, smells the fresh grass, hears the whisper of the trees, and the familiar warmth of a home away from home. The river outside is familiar too, only Steve can’t quite remember the imaginary friend he invented from it, when he needed one the most.
The river remembers him though, and will be damned if it watches his old friend sulk in loneliness instead of play with him, like he used to.

“That’s right, pal,” comes another voice from behind him, easy and confident and lilting with an audible smile, and it feels as though the breath is punched right out of Steve’s lungs. He stiffens, wrenches himself away from the reassuring warmth of Peggy’s arms, spins around –-
And apparently it isn’t enough for one love of Steve’s life to be here with him tonight, because now Bucky’s standing there too.

"Do you remember anything?" the man says. "Do you know who you are?"
He stares, trying to connect himself as he is now to something that existed before. There is nothing, and the concept fits strangely in his head, unsettled and instinctive and repulsive at the same time.
"No," he says finally.

Oh God, you are absolutely perfect!!!! Could I ask for a sequel for amnesiaSteve??? Please???
Perfect??? You’re too kind. :)
Part 1 is located here
It was clear that Steve was confused about what was going on. JARVIS kept telling Tony that the man was asking about him and asking to get into the lab, until finally he decided to block all messages coming from the blond. It would be easier, he decided, because he wouldn’t have to think about how Steve was willing to be so damn nice now that he couldn’t remember a thing about him. It would be easier because when Steve got his memories back, he wouldn’t have to miss the nice behavior. He would just keep himself shut in his workshop until this all blew over, because doctors seemed to think that Steve would regain his memories soon, thanks to the serum, and he could handle a few days of solitude in there; hell, he did it often enough, so it was hardly anything new for Tony anyways.
Some of the others came down to “check in” but he made sure they steered clear of the subject of Steve. It was something he wasn’t going to deal with.
He made it nearly four days before he had to emerge from the lab. He’d showered in his bathroom down there, so leaving for the bathroom hadn’t been necessary, but his supply of coffee had run low. Of all things, it had to be the damn coffee. JARVIS was mentioning how he needed to eat more than leftover pizza and protein shakes, but Tony only had one mission as he headed to check the communal pantry: acquire more coffee.
The pantry was large – large enough for several people to walk inside – and Tony headed to the back wall of shelves to find what he was looking for. Some of Bruce’s tea was stashed in the corner, and he thought that maybe one of the canisters there was what Natasha liked to drink sometimes, but Tony bypassed them as he picked up his own bag. There. Easy as that. Everything else was already in his workshop, so he turned on his heel to get back downstairs.
Of course, Steve just had to get in the way. Literally.
He was in the doorway to the kitchen, and Tony was trapped. His eyes flickered to the other exit on the other side of the bar, briefly, but Steve reached out.
“Don’t.”
Tony paused, but he avoided looking directly at him. “You need something, Capsicle? I left some stuff running and I’ve got to get back to it.
At that, Steve’s shoulders fell a little and he stepped closer. “I just wanted to talk to you,” he said, and finally Tony met his gaze. “It will only take a moment.”
Tony let out a long sigh, averting his eyes again, this time to the light switch on the wall. “Like I said, I’ve got stuff to get back to,” he began, but after a moment he sighed. If Steve kept looking at him like that, he was going to scream. “Just make it quick.”
“Right. I.. well, I’ve been trying to get ahold of you for a few days. Has JARVIS not told you that?” When Steve was met with silence, he frowned. “Look, I just want to talk. A lot has been going on over the last few days, and it would be nice to have another friend help-“
Tony choked out a harsh laugh.
“-fill in the details…” Steve finished, not sure how to gauge Tony’s reaction. There was only a moment before Tony started to back towards the other door, and Steve followed. “Tony-“
“No.” He raised a hand and shook his head. “No, I’m not sitting here to play touchy-feely with you, Steve. We aren’t friends, okay?” The confused look on Steve’s face made him shook his head. “We aren’t. We don’t get a long, and I’m not gonna sit around and pretend to be buds only for that to stop when you remember how much you hate my fucking guts. Alright? It isn’t happening.”
It looked like Steve wanted to say something, but Tony didn’t give him the chance.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, I actually have some important things to get back to.”
And with that, Tony fled.
He blocked all access to the lab, aside from himself (and Pepper, who was he kidding. She probably had the damn override codes anyways), and he buried himself in his work. It was the easiest way to distract himself, and he kept busy with building, designing, and redoing. Anything he could do, honestly. It was soothing to Tony, aside from Dum-E making the occasional mess, and he had no problem with letting this continue for as long as necessary.
Of course, nothing could last forever. A call to assemble came in a few days later, and Tony knew they’d all be meeting on the roof after getting suited up. He grabbed what he needed and headed out the door, but before he could round the corner something caught his eye – it was a piece of paper taped to the wall with a few simple words written on it:
I never hated you.
For a moment he stared at the note, trying to decide what that meant. He knew who it was from - it was signed with a simple S at the bottom. Did Steve remember? What this a peace offering, or –
Before he could decide, JARVIS spoke up.
“Might I suggest moving to the roof quickly, Sir.”
Tony slipped the note in his pocket and nodded. “Yeah, JARVIS. Got it.”
He could talk to Steve later. For now, there was a city to save.
He needs to focus on getting out of the handcuffs. There are orders, he knows there must be because on the inside of his left arm is a rank and name and ID number. Soldiers get orders. He knows that like he knows the sky is blue though he can't remember being outside of this warehouse.
