“Go ahead,” Steve interjects, but Danny doesn’t need his permission, so he ignores it.
He draws a circle in the air, indicating the blonde and the brunette, and the social jungle of the club in general. “Two very attractive ladies are eye-humping you, respectfully, and, and what? Nothing?”
Or: Danny, Steve, and Steve’s pulse walk into a bar. Is the punchline fight, flight, or a different f-word?

January is for hangovers—holiday or otherwise. Danny’s personal storm cloud looms on the horizon, the threat of turmoil lingering and rumbling through his life, causing him to neglect more than a few things out of a sense of ennui. Rachel has given Danny a bit of a break due to being in a good mood—i.e., she got proposed to by her new man before they’d even settled their divorce, and there’s a new and improved engagement ring on her finger that Danny could never have afforded even if he’d worked all the overtime in the world.
Given she now has a deadline she’s working up against, Rachel decides to turn the screws and informs Danny that she’s getting rid of their dog, Lucy, as she’s moving in with Stan, and Stan’s apartment building doesn’t do dogs on the first Friday in January. Allegedly the reason as Danny really suspects the problem is that Stan is allergic, but he’d had no grounds to object as his building doesn’t allow dogs either, which is a different problem.
Their divorce hearing is scheduled for February 1st, but Rachel tells him to come pick up Lucy, or she’s going to animal control in the morning.
This is how Danny ends up at Joe’s with Lucy in tow, her leash, food and water bowls, dog bed, and food out in the backseat of his unmarked patrol car he’d had to borrow at the last minute. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do, but he’s not letting Lucy roam the streets of New Jersey in the depths of winter.

Can’t Remember To Forget You
McDanno | 3.8k | Not Rated | Chapter 2/?
Danny knows something's not right.
First of all, out of all people, he has Lou and Adam waiting by his hospital bedside. He doesn't have anything against either of them, of course, but he wouldn't exactly consider them close friends. They're family because Steve and Kono have, respectively, declared it so, but that doesn't mean he's ever spent extended time with them without the rest of the team also being in attendance.

It’s been a big week. Steve got arrested and reinstated, then Rachel told Danny he wasn’t the father of her baby. Danny said he was going straight home after work, and Steve—against his better judgement—believed him.
Steve feels a little more celebratory, even if Danny’s sorrows are a cloud, and reluctantly accepts Chin and Kono’s offers to go out for Friday night drinks. They don’t stay too long after the week they’ve had, Chin settling up the tab before 8 o’clock, and the three of them part ways hoping they won’t get a call over the weekend.
Steve’s truck is parked a couple blocks away, giving him the chance to slowly observe the streets of Honolulu he normally races down. He sees a body sitting against a brick wall and a dumpster, only a shadow spreading itself across the ground and poking out of the alley. After a few steps closer, Steve does a double take.
“Danny?”
The shadow uncurls, looking up startled, staring at Steve like he’s a ghost.
“Hey,” Danny remarks, voice hollow and far too awkward given their relationship. Steve decides not to comment on the setting, instead attempting to get comfortable on the ground beside Danny. The bricks are cool on their back, and the smell of the dumpster is overpowering most of Danny’s smell of alcohol.
“You don’t have to go through this alone.”
Danny’s eyes don’t leave Steve’s face, tracing over the contours and emotions he’s spent everyday of the last year thinking about. Their bodies are already pressed together, the air that would be between them is long gone. Danny still doesn’t say anything, acting before his slither of sobriety might talk him out of it.
The kiss starts very slowly, both of their hesitance palpable, and the withdraw is achingly slow. Their breaths are heavy, might’ve been laboured if they were 15–20 years younger. They’re not teenagers though, they’re fully grown adults. They’re old enough to know that enthusiastic consent isn’t always spoken, sometimes it’s the shifts closer and tightening grips that say ‘don’t go’.
The second kiss is more intentional, each of them searching for what the other needs. Steve’s hand cups Danny’s head, as the messy blonde hair falls back onto the dumpster. They feel their bodies unravelling into each other.
“Tell me that this isn’t because of Rachel,” Steve whispers, words falling directly onto Danny’s lips.
“I can’t fucking believe this,” Danny can’t help but laugh, fill his eyes with amusement at the irony. “Babe,” he continues, voice almost flat and sarcastic, “if anything, Rachel only happened because this, because we, didn’t.”
“Well,” Steve’s sigh falls into a smug grin, “let’s continue this elsewhere.”
“Oh, yeah,” Danny looks around, “sorry about that. Let’s go, and let’s not tell Chin and Kono. I think they have a bet going.”
