Ever since I joined Tumblr about three weeks ago I have seen literally dozens of Amon theories floating around. Some are downright crazy while others might have some merit to them. The following is my opinion on each of these theories.
Seriously? What person would actually believe Amon is Aang? First off, as many people have pointed out, Aang is dead. Korra is the current Avatar and obviously Aang can't be alive if Korra is also alive. End of story. Plus, it wouldn't be in Aang's character to want to hurt and persecute innocent people and take their bending away. (If that's what Amon is really doing.). Also, as we have seen from promos, Amon's eyes are brown or amber colored, Aang's are a gray to sometimes blueish gray.
2. Amon is Firelord Ozai.
Another theory that is completely impossible. Ozai would have to be in his hundreds if he was even still alive, which I highly doubt. Amon, from what I can gather, has to be somewhere around his 30's if not possibly his early 40's at the most. Plus Amon is too cool-headed to be the hotheaded Ozai, their fighting styles are totally different.
Another theory with absolutely no facts to stand on. Zuko is currently in his eighties, way too old to be Amon. Plus Zuko has no known motive to be Amon. The supposed facial scarring they both share is the only thing that ties them together.
Uhhh, didn't we see them in the same room together? When Amon took his bending away? I can't believe people still believe Amon could be Tarrlok. They also both have completely different skin tones and eye colors. Plus, where would Tarrlok have learned to chi-block and "take away" a person's bending?
5. Amon is Bumi, Aang and Katara's non-bending son.
No. While it sounds like a good idea in theory it's simply not plausible. Bumi has a waterbender's dark skin color, completely opposite of Amon much fairer white skin. Plus I'm pretty sure Tenzin would recognize his own brother, mask or no mask. He isn't stupid.
6. Amon is Pema, Jinora, Pabu, or Asami.
No, No and No. If you haven't been listening to his voice, he's clearly a man. And I'm pretty sure they don't have the technology yet for voice changers, so no. Pema is too pregnant and is a woman, Jinora is too small, and is a young girl, Pabu is an animal, and Asami is a woman with green eyes.
7. Amon is Sokka, Sokka's son, Lin and Tenzin's son or Ty lee's son.
Sokka would be too old, his skin is too dark and his eyes are blue. Plus didn't Katara say her brother and friends had "passed on" in the first episode? As far as we know Sokka didn't have any children plus they would have likely been just as dark skinned as him with blue eyes. Amon can't be Lin and Tenzin's son or Lin's son. Amon is much too old to be their son or her son. Amon could be Ty Lee's son but still it's doubtful without knowing if she even had kids.
Another person who would be too old to be Amon, and most likely dead at this point. Also his skin is just a hair too dark and his eyes are kinda a blueish grey.
9. Amon is a half-Avatar born when Aang "died" when Azula struck him with lightning.
This idea has some merit but it seems entirely implausible given how the Avatar cycle works. Aang didn't really die, he was just fatally wounded. While Katara is a good healer I don't think she would have been able to save Aang if he had actually died. From what I grasped Aang was just unconscious from the wound Azula inflicted on him. Kinda like he was in a coma, not dead.
10. Amon is Hiroshi Sato.
Another theory that is impossible. Hiroshi has been in the same room as Amon, even conversing with him, so he can't possibly be him. Hiroshi is also shorter and more barrel-chested than Amon.
11. Amon is the Cabbage Merchant.
While he does have a motive he is most likely deceased at this point or way too old to be Amon. Also his skin is too dark.
12. Amon is a new character.
The only theory that truly makes sense. I know everyone wants Amon to have some sort of insane connection to the old AtLA series but I don't think Konietzko or Dimartino would do that for such a major character. I mean think about, does Mako, Bolin, or Asami have ties to the old series? No they do not. Now does that necessarily mean Amon's story about his life is true? No it doesn't. He could easily be lying, or not. Whether or not we find out isn't the point. The point is that this series is plain awesome and while I love Amon to death I can't wait to see Korra fight and defeat him. :D
