Anyone else wouldn’t have been able to hear her over the band, the dancing and the laughter, but Mary only sat back and watched him, grinning – she had taken a seat on top of one of the tables, near the centre of the swirling party, and as she beckoned Ignatius closer the glassy-eyed guests reached out to affectionately pat her hair, her shoulder, the hem of her dress or the tip of her shoe.
Whatever they could reach.
She nodded at the chair beside her; it was unclear whether the motion was an invitation or a command. “I know all about you,” she told him, “and I know all about what he’s sent you here to say.” There was a certain air about her, something that made it clear she found both Ignatius and his errand entirely irrelevant, something that showed she begrudged him eating into her night.
“You can tell Oswald if his business can’t deal with someone else throwing a few parties, he hasn’t got much of a business to begin with.” She stared him down, still smiling – her teeth glinted in the light, but not a single person seemed to notice. “Sit down, you can tell me all about what he wants and then leave me the fuck alone.” She laughed, a bright, eager sound like bells. “You hungry? We’ve got a buffet spread.”
