Is Claire's different in the UK? Here it's the home of sparkly pink plastic and popular but dodgy ear piercing.

It’s where teenage goths shop a lot. Yeah, it is mostly glittery unicorn vomit stuff, but Claires here does actually stock some goth stuff like necklaces, hair dye, fishnet gloves and black lipstick.

 I honestly just had an argument on Facebook with an American friend a few hours ago because I was trying to explain this. She got so pissed she deleted the comment thread.

We don’t have Hot Topic in the UK so maybe that’s the difference.

Have I recommended A Madness of Angels by Kate Griffin to you? The protagonist is a composite person with the different parts very meshed.

That would be one way to do it, yeah! She’s a really fully integrated individual, and her two components only really come into play when they have a disagreement. We don’t see much of her internal processes, so it’s unclear how different she is from a singular gem, and that could be interesting to flesh out in either fandom. I’d say she’s close to being one body and one mind that occasionally splits into two of each, than the 1.5 combo being that I’d be most interested in seeing though.

I just feel like a lot of fic focuses on their relationship as a romantic, cohabiting one that emphasizes the differences and separation between Eddie and Venom, sometimes even explicitly having Venom develop their own identity (often called V/Vee and sometimes going by “I” instead of “we”) as an individual over time and gaining a more human sense of self than they had at the start. Which is a totally valid and interesting thing to explore! But I also want to take a look at the flipside, taking Venom’s “we” and the meshing of two very different beings from very different backgrounds and diving into that to see what kinds of forms it could take.

I do not know how I would go about it myself; I’m not a writer, merely an appreciator of fine inhuman content. What comes to mind is switching which brain they’re using based on which one is better at the task at hand and flipping from one set of preferences to another at the drop of a hat, coordinating multiple sets of limbs and performing athletic feats without seeming to pay any attention to what they’re doing, or correcting their actions halfway through as they realize that they were working on the wrong social norms for a minute there.

  The people who think “they” is only a plural...

All language is made up! Language is constantly evolving! People who actually work with language take a descriptivist approach instead of a prescriptivist one! And ‘they’ has been used as a single pronoun for centuries. So like, even from an academic perspective those people are just plain wrong. If they’re so into English they should try learning a bit more about it before telling people what pronouns they can use.

Yeah!

I used to be one of those “if your first language is English, you should speak/write proper English, and dialects are for the unintelligent and uneducated.”

But, like, I also used to stand on top of my dresser and see how far I could launch my pee.

Thank god I grew out of both.
